Location

Fron Newydd lies on the N side of the minor road from Llanegryn to Tonfanau, on the N side of the Dysynni estuary. The farmyard lies in front of and below the farmhouse, and is defined by a low stone wall at the lower side.

History

The eastern range of farm buildings at Fron Newydd appears slightly later in date than the western range, and are probably early C19 - perhaps contemporary with the repair of the house in 1820.

Exterior

Built of roughly coursed stone rubble, with slate roofs. The building consists of 2 sections, set at right angles to the raised farmhouse terrace, and running down the slope. The first section is a barn, with central opposed boarded doors, and a small high-set window at the lower end on the yard-facing elevation. Small pitching door in upper gable end. The second section is of one build with the first, but the front wall is raised, reducing the pitch of the roof. It has a single doorway on to the yard at its lower end, and doorway to loft in the rear wall. Brick lean-to structure on lower gable end replaced a similar stone building c1952.

Interior

The barn has two king-post trusses of C19 type and is divided into three structural bays, defined by rough stone piers supporting the tie beams. Rough timber partitions separating storage area and calf-pen from central threshing/food preparation floor.

Reason for designation

Included as a well-preserved traditional farm building range which forms part of an especially good vernacular planned farmstead at Fron Newydd, making ingenious use of its sloping site.
