Location

On the street continuing Church Street east out of the town centre.

History

Early/midC19. Built as a pair with No. 25 but now very different in appearance. They are shown on John Wood's map of 1835 but must have been built very soon before its production. It is hard to say whether No. 25's different appearance is original or (more likely) a later alteration in deliberately matching style.

Exterior

Rendered and painted with Welsh slate roofs. Double depth plan with entry on left, but there is also a rear wing which may have once been a separate house. Two storeys, four windows with the right hand two in a three storey, slightly projecting northern wing. Open pedimented doorcase with 6-panel door and plain transom lights. The window to the right of the door is a tall 6 over 6 pane sash, the ones in the wing are similar but smaller. The first floor has standard 6 over 6 pane sashes on the left and taller ones in the wing. The third floor (wing only) has 3 over 6 sashes. All windows have hoodmoulds, with the main ground floor one supported on small cherub figure brackets, and cills supported on decorated brackets. Modillion eaves cornice. Low pitch roof with hip to front on north wing, stack at join between main range and wing.
The right return has a single window on the first and second floor as before at the front. The wing declines to two low storeys and has a doorway with hood on brackets, five varying sash windows and a second stack. Rear elevation not seen.

Reason for designation

Included for its special architectural interest as a mid C19 house of definite character which is part of the important group of historic buildings near St. Mary's Church.
