Location

The farmhouse lies on rising ground above Dolobran, and is reached by a continuation of the lane off the N side of the A470 passing Dolobran.

History

The house dates from the late C16 or early C17.

Exterior

The house is built of local rubble and whitewashed, the farm building in line of heavy stone and galetted, all under a continuous slate roof with a gable stack at the W end. The house part is of 3 bays, one storey and attic. Boarded door in a heavy chamfered frame, and 2-light 2-paned timber windows with wooden lintels, the door and windows renewed in the 1990s. The farm range consists of a 3-bay roof over a cowhouse, with a lean-to extension at the front, and a stable door to the cowhouse.

Interior

The house consists of a major living-kitchen at the W end with a large inglenook stack and stair at the side, a cross passage from the front door, and formerly 2 rooms at the E end, a buttery and small parlour. Original plank and muntin partition. Collar beam trusses carrying two tiers of purlins.

The interior of the cowhouse has a collar beam truss, some timbers re-used, carrying purlins. The roofing is of thick slate, oak pegged in graded courses.

Reason for designation

Included as a good example of a late C16 or early C17 hill farmhouse of traditional form, with farm building in line, and one which has been very sensitively restored in the 1990s.
