In the town square in the centre of Monmouth.

History

Early/mid C19 frontage with a small amount of C20 alteration. The building of the curved frontage may coincide with the laying-out of Priory Street in 1837. The balcony, looking onto the main square of the town, is likely to have been used for electioneering in the C19. The public house was closed for several years prior to conversion as a shop and office in 2004.

Exterior

Smooth stucco with a paint finish; Welsh slate roof. Built with a slightly curved frontage as Agincourt Square leads into Priory Street at this point. Three storeys, three windows, 2 + 1. Six over 6 pane sashes to the left with 3 over 6 on the second floor. Recessed doorway with two plain columns, six panel door up four steps. Large early C20 shop window on right with iron balcony over to first floor window. This has French casements with marginal glazing, plain canopy over, another 3 over 6 sash on the floor above. Raised lettering THE MARKET TAVERN in the centre. Overhanging eaves, low pitch roof with paired stacks on the rear slope..
