Location

Ysgubor-fawr lies at the E extremity of the community, reached from the road running N-S east of Bwlch Mawr. The old house lies in a separate enclosure to the NW of the new house.

History

The house and attached building probably date from the late C18 or early C19.

Exterior

A dwelling house with attached farm building in line, built of rubble stonework and rendered, at one time partly painted with red raddle, and with a grouted old slate roof having superimposed stone gable copings. Gable stacks. Door and windows recently replaced to simulate the original, but one original 6-pane sash, the window frames deeply set in the walls either side of the door. The attached 2-bay farm building is slightly narrower, with a cross passage in the lofted roof against the house gable, and a 2-bay cowhouse at the end with a granary over, accessed from the raised external ground level. Attached to the rear, an extension to the dairy with an external door, and a later rendered brick service building.

Interior

The door enters the living room, which is shielded by a short matchboarded partition. Flagged floor, with some brick towards the rear, and two slender cross beams for the loft floor. Deep fireplace with an iron range, brick oven, and, against the front wall, a shelved recess, and a small wall-hung dresser. The corner to the right of the fire is divided off as a dairy, extended out and furnished with a cold slab. Steps from the dairy lead into the later extension. The adjoining farm building has a low floor over, and the cowhouse is open to the roof, with a C19 cross beam and manger against the gable end wall. The raised front garden is retained by battered boulder walls, with a central opening and openings against the house at each end.

Reason for designation

Included as a well preserved late C18-early C19 small upland farmstead forming part of an intact farm group.
