Location

Part of the short listed range on the W side of the street, nearest to Twyn Square and opposite Ty Brith.

History

An early origin, with some C16-C17 fabric, later raised by the addition of a full top storey.

Exterior

Georgian-fronted townhouse of earlier origin. Of stone, stucco rendered, slightly scored, painted to front, with raised quoins and window surrounds; shallow-pitched slate roof with overhanging slightly swept eaves and brick end stacks. Double-fronted, three storeys, a two window range of wide windows in reveals with moulded architraves with keystone: 12-pane casements to top floor, 16-pane sashes to first and ground floor. Centre-right doorway with bracketed hipped slate-roofed hood with zigzag frieze and swept metal arch (similar to houses opposite), 6-panelled door. Deep plinth. A substantially wider area between windows and quoins to left to accomodate earlier chimney; during restoration left side elevation showed rubble construction where lean-to was removed. Railings on a stone kerb with fleur-de-lys finials and double gates extend across frontage. To rear a lower Victorian cross wing with cantered bay to S and a further extension under construction to N.

Interior

Interior ground floor has chamfered and stopped cross beams with tenons for screens either side of former passage. To right the ceiling has chamfered and stopped joists, plastered to left. All the timber is unstained. Large open fireplace to left with deep timber lintel, keyed. Spiral stairs beside, under repair at time of inspection. Recess in rear wall with wide splay to left, inset cupboard to right. narrow lobby to right and wide boarded side door. Some shutters, panelled reveals and door surrounds with paterae retained. First floor has further chamfered and stopped cross beams throughout; main room to left has open fireplace with large timber lintel. Purlins visible in seond floor rooms.

Reason for designation

Listed as a townhouse with Georgian facade and important earlier fabric. Group value with other listed buildings in Priory Street and Twyn Square.
