L-shaped Agricultural Range at Ty'n-y-Ffrith

Location

Located immediately to the rear (W) of Ty'n-y-Ffrith, and part of a farm group.

History

C18 barn re-roofed in 1829 (internally dated) and extended to the SE with a cart and stable block.

Exterior

L-shaped agricultural range consisting of a large primary barn set into the slope of the hill, with a later adjoining carthouse and stable block to the SE. Of rubble construction with renewed, graded small-slate roof. The barn has opposing entrances towards the upper end with flanking ventilation slits on both long sides. The NW side has an upper pegged-framed open window to the L of the entrance, with a further, boarded window opening to the far L; all have exposed timber lintels. The lower bay (NE), at the foot of the hillslope has a basement stable, accessed via a central ground-floor entrance in the gable; this has an old C19 folding boarded door with contemporary frame heavily enriched with graffiti. Flanking this are 2 small square lights with contemporary pegged frames; bird bars and inner shutters.

The 2-storey stable and cart section adjoins at right-angles to the L and has 2 large cart bays to the far L and a stable entrance with boarded door to the R; in the centre is a small, plain, open window. The upper floor has three 2-light windows with plain wooden mullions, bird bars and pegged frames. External stone-stepped access to upper gable entrance at L with original boarded door and exposed timber lintel.

Interior

Four-bay barn with rubble dividing wall between the lower bay and the 3-bay main section. The latter has bolted king post trusses (their raking struts removed). The ground level slopes up towards the SW, the two upper bays being stepped up with slate-flagged floors; a slate slab wall divides these two bays at dado height. Painted over the inner entrance lintel on the SE side is the date 1829.

Cobbled floor to stable bay with wooden slatted manger and planked loose box divisions. The cart-house section has slightly-cambered compound timber lintels to the cart bays, with part-cobbled floors and boarded partitions between the bays, all C19.
