Cadw's description
Location
The house is set close to the road, approximately 850m from the centre of St George village, and 150m NW of the Nant Ddu road junction.
History
A toll house built c1850 on the early C19 turnpike road from Abergele through Kinmel Park to St Asaph. The turnpike was moved in 1863 by Act of Parliament during enparkment, to the line of the old A55.
Exterior
Built of polygonal Carboniferous limestone with ashlar dressings and a slate half-hipped roof. Gothic style. One storey and attic, 2.5 bays, comprising a half-bay on the left containing the recessed and pointed arched framed and boarded door. To the left, a canted bay set under a sprocketed pyramidal roof, having paired shouldered lights on each face. The right bay (W) is wider, and has triple shouldered lights. Two similar single lights on the E gable end and a trangular oriel window to the attic floor at each end of the building. A C20 extension has been added to the rear. Brick stack.
Reason for designation
Included as a well-preserved example of a mid C19 toll cottage in a Tudor-Gothic style.
