Location

Located on a possible platform site downslope from Cefn y coed, with timber and masonry farmbuildings to the W.

History

C18 masonry house, possibly encasing an earlier timber framed structure.

Exterior

Three-unit lobby entry plan. Two storeys, attic and cellar. Rendered masonry under a slate roof. Red brick stack opposite entrance and red brick end stack to E gable. The front elevation is a 3-window range, the windows under segmental arched heads, and comprising transomed 3-light casements. Planked front door. Three gabled attic dormers containing 2-light casements. Masonry rubble visible to W gable end within a modern lean-to porch. Rear door in gable end, with 2-light casement above to attic storey. The E gable end has no openings. There is a cellar under the E end of the house, entered from the front and rear. Early lean-to extension with catslide roof to W side of rear elevation with 2 irregular casements. The lean-to is entered via a planked door in the E end which is said to contain evidence for timber framing. Further E, the masonry of the main range is exposed in places with cement patching. Four irregular casements; 1 cast iron casement to the ground floor, 1 cast iron casement and two C20 casements to the first floor. Gabled attic dormer containing a 2-light casement.

Interior

The 3-unit plan is retained, although the staircase has been repositioned to the right of the front door. There is a chamfered spine beam in the hall, and another in the former inner room to the E with stops. In the kitchen at the W end, there is evidence for possible close studding in the NW corner and 2 chamfered spine beams without stops.

Reason for designation

Listed as a substantial C18 vernacular stone-built farmhouse (with possible earlier origins) retaining its original plan form, and consistently detailed.
