Location

Located to the E of St Hilary village, set back off of the Llantrithyd road, accessed from the lane by a long private drive from the road leading E out of the village.

History

Understood to have formerly been the home of the notable Glamorganshire antiquary The Revd. Montgomery Traherne.

Exterior

Large, early to mid C19 house with substantial later additions. Two storey rendered elevation with natural slate roof. Six stacks, three axial, three gable, constructed in ashlar and Staffordshire blue bricks, with pots. L-shaped plan, with main range aligned on an E/W axis, exploiting views to the S having two chimneys with a long two storey range aligned on a N/S axis, having three chimneys. Smaller two storey range set to the W side with large gable chimney abutting both ranges. The front (S elevation) comprises a three window range with 16 pane sashes to first floor and modern conservatory to ground. E elevation has C20 stone stair case leading to separate entry with modern fenestration in enlarged openings and projecting door canopy. Full-height apsidal bay at E end of front elevation with central pair of front doors to ground and flanking fifteen pane sashes, without horns. Above this are three, twelve pane sashes. Evidence of earlier verandah canopy between ground and first floor. Smaller two storey N range has main doorway on W elevation with sashes to E at ground and first floor level.

Restoration in progress at time of inspection (June 1995).

Interior

Simply detailed later C19 interior with some later fittings and remodelling dating from the second World War occupation by the army. Cast-iron balustrade to staircase, probably C20.

Reason for designation

Listed grade II for its origins as a large Early to mid C19 house.
