On this site / stood the house / in which / Johannes / Brahms / lived from 1. January 1872 / and / died on 3. April 1897.

The original commemorative plaque was already installed in 1899 on Brahms's death house at Karlsgasse 4. It bore the inscription: "In this house Johannes Brahms died on 3. April 1897 in his 64th year. To the memory of the famous composer, the City of Vienna."
After the demolition of the house and the construction of a new building as part of the Technische Universität, the plaque still in place today was installed in 1922 with slightly altered text.
