Omschrijving
R.K. KERK, voormalige parochiekerk van de H. Maagd Maria Ten Hemelopneming, in 1824-1829 gebouwd; sedert 1990 in gebruik als stadsschouwburg. Driebeukige hallenkerk met jonische zuilen op hoge basementen en segmentvormige scheibogen; brede galerij in de westelijke traveeën. Ton- en graatgewelven van stuc resp. in middenbeuk en zijbeuken. Strenge gepleisterde voorgevel met torentje uit 1846. Orgel uit 1864, hoogaltaar 1861 naar ontwerp van Cels te Brussel, uitgevoerd door C.J. Rogier met snijwerk van Peeters-Dievoort te Turnhout. Voorts in de kerk een eiken communiebank uit XVIII B, afkomstig uit de St. Michielsabdij te Antwerpen, een eveneens uit Antwerpen afkomstige eiken biechtstoel. Fraai smeedijzeren toegangshek aan de Markt. Naar deze kerk is in de vorige eeuw het stoffelijk overschot der Heren van Bergen overgebracht.

Description
Roman Catholic Church, former parish church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, built 1824-1829; since 1990 in use as municipal theatre. Three-aisle hall church with Ionic columns on high bases and segment-shaped arches; broad gallery in the western bays. Barrel and groin vaults of stucco respectively in central aisle and side aisles. Austere plastered front facade with small tower from 1846. Organ from 1864, high altar 1861 after design by Cels at Brussels, executed by C.J. Rogier with carving by Peeters-Dievoort at Turnhout. Further in the church an oak communion rail from the second half of the 18th century, originating from the St. Michael's Abbey at Antwerp, a likewise from Antwerp originating oak confessional. Fine wrought iron entrance gate at the Markt. To this church in the previous century the mortal remains of the Lords of Bergen were transferred.
