Omschrijving
Waag. In het waaggebouw zijn het drie traveeën lange schip en het niet uitspringende transept van de kapel van het v.m. H. Geesthuis bewaard gebleven (XV); ter plaatse van het koor verrees in 1582 de twee traveeen diepe waagruimte met rijk front, 1884 vernieuwd; de toren, steunend op vier pijlers in de kruising van de v.m. kapel werd gebouwd van 1597-1599. Het schip van de v.m. kapel heeft inwendig het oorspronkelijk eikehouten tongewelf grotendeels behouden, bevat enige gotische consoles en is door twee houten vloeren verdeeld in een beganegrond, een verdieping en een zolder. De transeptgevels vertonen moeten van hoogopgaande vensters. De waaggevel, opgebouwd uit baksteen met een rijke toepassing van natuursteen, bestaat uit vier geledingen: de gebosseerde onderbouw met drie rondboogpoorten, de verdieping met attische pilasters en de beide geledingen van de top, respectievelijk geleed door ionische en door korintische pilasters; de gevelbekroning tenslotte is, evenals de hoekvullingen van de beide topgeledingen, samengesteld uit rolwerk en draagt een klein driehoekig fronton. Description
Weighhouse. In the weighhouse building there are preserved the three-bay-long nave and the non-projecting transept of the chapel of the former H. Geesthuis (15th century); in the place of the choir rose in 1582 the two-bay-deep weighing room with rich front, renewed in 1884; the tower, resting on four piers at the crossing of the former chapel was built from 1597-1599. The nave of the former chapel has internally largely retained the original oak barrel vault, contains some Gothic consoles and is divided by two wooden floors into a ground floor, a first floor and an attic. The transept gables show passages of tall windows. The weighhouse facade, built up in brick with a rich application of natural stone, consists of four storeys: the rusticated base with three round-arched portals, the first floor with Attic pilasters and the two storeys of the top, respectively articulated by Ionic and by Corinthian pilasters; the gable crown finally is, like the corner fillings of the two top storeys, composed of strapwork and carries a small triangular pediment. In the lowest storey of the gable top the sculptured coat of arms of Alkmaar. Two figures, one representing justice, the other peace, two pinnacles and two sculptured vases at the corners of the cornices of the storeys enliven the contour of the facade. The tower consists of a square brick base, a passage with balustrade on consoles and a wooden octagon, which carries the open spire with pear crown. In the weighing room iron balances (second half of the 17th century). A carillon, of which 9 bells cast by M. de Haze 1688, and 38 modern bells. Hour and drum mechanism by Willem Sprakel, 1684.
