Cluster 38. Inundatieduiker 3.
NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Inleiding

Description
Cluster 38. Inundation Culvert 3.
NEW HOLLANDIC WATERLINE
Introduction
(INUNDATION) CULVERT 3 to the east of Fort De Bilt as a supporting component of the inundation system of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie and the moat of Fort De Bilt in particular. The defence system of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie was primarily based on the controlled flooding of (large) land areas. Controlled inundation required an ingenious system of waterworks, such as locks, weirs and canals, by means of which the necessary water level could be set and maintained quickly and within narrow limits. Many different types of locks were used, depending on the location where they functioned in the system. Sometimes already existing navigation, drainage or non-return locks were used, but many new ones were also built or existing ones (substantially) modified. With the routing of the Biltsestraatweg through the fort, three concrete culverts were laid as connections between the two moat halves to ensure sufficient flow for inundation (and when culverts 1 and 2 are closed) via 3 an equal water level in the moat. The culverts formed part of the local defence system and had a military and a civil function. Culverts 1 and 2 - inundation culverts - are located to the west of the fort; Culvert 3 to the east of it. The three culverts had a military and a civil function.
Description
(INUNDATION) CULVERT 3 as part of the Biltsestraatweg, routed diagonally through the fort around 1930. The culvert consists of a masonry construction with front walls and angled, sloping retaining walls (approximately 4.40 metres wide). The culvert comprises one pipe, composed of oval sewage pipes. The culvert has a length of approximately 40 metres, by which the road is crossed. The culvert can be closed by means of a slide gate.
Valuation
(INUNDATION) CULVERT 3 on the east side of Fort De Bilt is of general interest because of:
* Cultural-historical values as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially constructed from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others over approximately 125 years.
* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of construction and waterworks related to military-strategic building, which are based on the system of inundation and access defence (20th century).
This concerns an expression of historical water engineering related to military-strategic building, namely a military and civil culvert from approximately 1930.
* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex and in particular with culverts no. 1 and 2.
* The component is representative (characteristic) because it was built in connection with the layout of the Biltsestraatweg routed through the fort.
* The component is reasonably well preserved because the main form, building details and various components have remained recognizable.
