Inleiding
JAKNIKKER. De jaknikker staat in het (winkel)centrum van Schoonebeek, aan De Pallert. Een jaknikker is een "(olie)pomp met een balans die steeds op en neer gaat" (Van Dale). Het betreft een stalen opvoerwerktuig i.c. een pomp waarmee tot een diepte van circa 800 m aardolie uit de ondergrond kan worden geput door middel van identieke, repeterende bewegingen. Voor de exploitatie werd in 1947 de Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij (NAM) opgericht. In 1996 is de oliewinning in Nederland gestaakt.
Omschrijving
De stalen JAKNIKKER (type BE) dateert uit circa 1950 en bestaat uit een hooggeplaatste hamervormige constructie die op twee tegenover elkaar geplaatste, A-vormige ondersteuningen rust: de steel van de "hamer" is de pompstang, de kop van de "hamer" heet balanssegment maar wordt ook "paardenkop" genoemd. De "hamer" heeft aan de punt van de kop een stelsel van staaldraden dat verticaal verbonden is met een plunjerpomp met stelwielen terwijl aan de achterzijde (i.c. de "steel" van de hamer) twee stalen armen zijn bevestigd. Deze twee armen sluiten aan op twee zware, halfronde schijfvormige contragewichten met daarop de naam van de fabrikant "THOMASSEN". De gehele jaknikker is groen geschilderd en staat op een staalconstructie van H-profielen: liggers, schoren en staanders.
Waardering
De jaknikker vertegenwoordigt algemeen belang wegens - de cultuurhistorische betekenis, want de jaknikker is een nationaal icoon van vooruitgang en geldt als toonbeeld van de toenemende welvaart van herrijzend Nederland; - de hoge zeldzaamheidsgraad: in ons land zijn enkele oude jaknikkers bewaard gebleven terwijl in de naoorlogse decennia in en rond Schoonebeek circa 300 jaknikkers hebben gefunctioneerd; - de esthetische waarde van het object: de zuiver rudimentaire vormgeving getuigt van industriële efficiëncy en schoonheid; - de gaaf behouden hoofdvorm en constructie van de jaknikker, zijnde het bekendste en meest herkenbare werktuig van de aardoliewinning in ons land; - de industrieel-archeologische betekenis, want het object is niet alleen een karakteristieke proeve van ingenieurskunst maar heeft tevens belangwekkende symboolwaarde voor de geschiedenis van bedrijf en techniek; - de situering op een voormalige oliewinplaats.

JACK PUMP. The jack pump stands in the (shopping) centre of Schoonebeek, on De Pallert. A jack pump is a "(oil) pump with a balance that constantly goes up and down" (Van Dale). Description
The steel JACK PUMP (type BE) dates from circa 1950 and consists of a high-placed hammer-shaped construction that rests on two opposing, A-shaped supports: the shaft of the "hammer" is the pump rod, the head of the "hammer" is called balance segment but is also referred to as "horse head". The "hammer" has at the point of the head a system of steel wires that is vertically connected to a plunger pump with spur wheels while at the rear (namely the "shaft" of the hammer) two steel arms are attached. These two arms connect to two heavy, semi-circular disc-shaped counterweights bearing the name of the manufacturer "THOMASSEN". The entire jack pump is painted green and stands on a steel construction of H-section profiles: beams, braces and uprights.
Valuation
The jack pump is of general importance because of - its cultural-historical significance, for the jack pump is a national icon of progress and is regarded as an exemplar of the increasing prosperity of resurgent the Netherlands; - its high degree of rarity: in our country a few old jack pumps have been preserved whereas in the post-war decades approximately 300 jack pumps operated in and around Schoonebeek; - the aesthetic value of the object: the purely rudimentary design testifies to industrial efficiency and beauty; - the well-preserved main form and construction of the jack pump, being the best-known and most recognizable tool of crude oil extraction in our country; - its industrial-archaeological significance, for the object is not only a characteristic example of engineering but also has considerable symbolic value for the history of industry and technology; - its location on a former oil extraction site.
