NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Inleiding

NEW HOLLAND WATERLINE
Introduction
INUNDATION SLUICE / DRAINAGE SLUICE (Dalemse Sluice), as one of the water works dating from the earliest period of construction of the New Holland Waterline, consisting of three parallel water channels. The defence system of the New Holland Waterline was primarily based on the controlled flooding of (large) areas of terrain. Controlled inundation required an ingenious system of water works, such as sluices, weirs and channels, by means of which the necessary water level could be set and maintained quickly and within narrow limits. Many different types of sluices were employed, depending on where they functioned in the system. Sometimes already existing navigation, drainage or tide sluices were used, but many new ones were also built or existing ones (substantially) adapted. In the latter category falls the inundation and drainage sluice in the northern Merwededijk near Dalem. This concerns a sluice with three parallel passages, equipped with multiple closing provisions. Through this sluice water from the Merwede could be admitted into the Polders Hoog Dalem and Het Broek. The sluice lies within the former field of fire of the fortress Gorinchem. Also important was its function as an emergency drainage sluice for this same area which, after a possible dyke breach upstream (the Waal), could be redirected back to the Merwede at this location; the sluice was designed for this purpose in 1814, but was immediately thereafter adapted for military applications. The sluice is the successor of an emergency drainage sluice, the Ambtssluis, from 1661, which was damaged by flooding (1809) and war operations (1814). The sluice was adapted and enlarged several times over the years. The sluice initially had per chamber one pair of pointed doors on the river side and a set of stop planks on the land side. A fixed, vaulted bridge over the sluice formed the connection between the adjacent river dykes. Shortly after its completion it was adapted so that it could also be used as an intake sluice for water from the Waal / Merwede. The three chambers with pointed doors facing the Waal side were slightly adapted for this purpose. The vaults over the sluice were removed and replaced by a wooden bridge. In 1850-1851, after considerable damage from ice drift, the heads on the river side were extended and fitted with flood doors, whilst on the land side additional stop plank slots were provided. In 1897 the existing sluice was enlarged once more. At that time, on account of the inundations, three more sets of doors facing the land side were also installed, by means of which water could be admitted and then closed off. The then total of nine pairs (three times three) of wooden doors had to be operated by hand, whilst the six stop plank closures could be positioned by the cast iron winding gear still present. It is noteworthy that no fan doors were installed; opening against high river water and admitting water was thus impossible. This presumably was connected to the fact that the sluice had no navigation function. A 'watch position' with closed stop plank closure was then considered sufficient. In 1901 the six older pairs of doors were replaced, after which a complete restoration was carried out in 1921. In 1949 / 50 the doors were replaced again and possibly the reinforced concrete bridge built over the sluice also dates from this time. In 1989 the sluice was separated from the river by a sheet pile wall in order to be restored. Around 1997 a total, careful restoration began which resulted in the structure now being in open communication with the river again. The northern stop plank closure is permanently set. In the vicinity there were some, since cleared, batteries, of which possible remains or traces may still be present in the ground.
Description
INUNDATION SLUICE / DRAINAGE SLUICE (Dalemse Sluice), consisting of three parallel, masonry, natural stone-capped chambers, each equipped with three sets of pointed doors and matching stop plank provisions. The sluice was built as an emergency drainage sluice in 1814/1815, but was immediately after completion adapted for use as an inundation sluice within the New Holland Waterline. Subsequently the sluice was substantially enlarged around 1850 by extension and raising of the heads. The four heads - on the river side semi- or quarter-round masonry - are now approximately 30 m long and the total width of the structure is approximately 23 m; the individual chambers are approximately 5.50 m wide. The sluice is equipped on the south side with three times two pointed doors facing the river and to the north of these a set of pointed doors facing the land side, all with manually operated winding gear and slides. On the working platforms on the sluice doors are wrought iron balustrades for the operation of the slides or chains. The stop planks could be positioned or removed by davits still present. The sluice is among the oldest still existing sluices of the New Holland Waterline and represents rarity value as a completely preserved inundation sluice, adapted multiple times for its function, along one of the major rivers.
Valuation
The INUNDATION SLUICE / DRAINAGE SLUICE (Dalemse Sluice), part of the complex Intermediate Position Spijksche Veld is of general importance because of:
* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Holland waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and in its initial construction from 1815 realised by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently by others over approximately 125 years strengthened and improved.
* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of construction related to military-strategic building, which is based on the system of inundation and access defence (19th century).
This concerns an expression of historical water engineering related to civil and military-strategic building, namely an inundation sluice / drainage sluice from 1814/15, enlarged in 1850/51.
* Archaeological values, on account of possible remains or traces of former batteries, earthworks or other defence structures still present in the ground.
* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Holland Waterline. Furthermore on account of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.
* The component is well preserved because main form and components have been retained or supplemented in faithful replica form or austere execution.
* The component is representative (characteristic) because it clearly demonstrates the former function and operation of this type of sluice.
