Cluster 5. V.I.S.-Kazemat.

NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE Inleiding

Waardering

Cluster 5. V.I.S.-Casemate.

NEW HOLLANDIC WATER LINE Introduction

V.I.S.-CASEMATE as constructed component of Fort Hinderdam. Fort Hinderdam originated as an earthen sconce for the defence of the sea locks once located here. In 1672-1673 Fort Hinderdam was rebuilt as a bastioned fort. Two moated lunettes were also constructed at the fort. After the sea locks were moved to Muiden in 1674, the defence of the Vecht and both banks of the Vecht remained the principal function. The fort was modified and adapted several times. In 1934 this V.I.S.-casemate was created. Due to ecological designation the fort could not be visited and for the description written sources alone were used.

Between 1928 and 1935 the Voorschrift Inrichten Stellingen (V.I.S.) [Instructions for the Arrangement of Fortifications] appeared in several parts. These works arose from a desire to standardise the construction of reinforced concrete group shelters and combat positions, which had previously been lacking. The instructions were intended for the construction of fortifications in wartime conditions, by the troops themselves. For peacetime the engineers would produce other designs. Because the V.I.S. were intended for inexperienced conscript soldiers, the designs of the casemates were as simple as possible, with rectangular forms. Various construction options per casemate type were given, which could be adapted to the wartime conditions under which construction had to take place. Resistance capability could also vary per structure, being W 12-15, W 15-21 or W 21-28. The first work of the V.I.S. was part VII, Construction of Heavy Reinforced Concrete Shelters. It applied from the date of publication as a standard for the entire Dutch armed forces. Contrary to what the title suggests, part VII dealt mainly with combat positions. Only two of the ten example designs concerned shelters. The instructions from the V.I.S. were strongly theoretical in nature or based on knowledge and experience from neighbouring countries and the First World War. There were therefore various critical voices from military circles, both regarding the health risks to personnel, and from a tactical-technical perspective. Only after a number of V.I.S.-casemates (in peacetime) had been built did a training casemate come into being, intended for the instruction of operating personnel. This led to some modifications to already constructed works. Virtually all V.I.S.-casemates were built at new or improved accesses in the East Front Fortress Holland, namely 34 of the 40 total examples.

Description

From 1934 V.I.S.-CASEMATE, which together with a V.I.S.-gun casemate at Fort Uitermeer and a second machine gun casemate at the Keverdijk, defended the provincial road Hilversum-Weesp dating from 1927. The casemate, executed in reinforced concrete, was built according to the Instructions for the Arrangement of Fortifications, V.I.S. type V. The casemate is one storey high and rectangular in form, with a flat roof. On the side of the machine gun loophole the walls have a thickness of 2.30 m, at the top there is a covering of 1.50 metres of concrete, plus a layer of earth. From the entrance a right-angled corridor is accessible, to which two rooms adjoin. These are a waiting room for personnel and a combat room for the positioning of a machine gun. The waiting room has a rifle loophole for covering the entrance and for the machine gun there is a loophole on the front side.

Valuation

The V.I.S.-CASEMATE is of general interest because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Hollandic Water Line as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus, and subsequently by others over approximately 125 years strengthened and improved.

* Architectural-historical values in particular as an expression of military-strategic building, which is based on:

a. the system of inundation and access defence (20th century),

b. the race with increasingly strengthened offensive means (20th century)

c. the system of 'living' field fortification in depth (20th century)

The component is an example of a V.I.S.-machine gun casemate from 1934.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Hollandic Water Line. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex and with some comparable objects in adjoining complexes.

* The component is fairly rare because only 40 V.I.S.-casemates were built in the Netherlands and also as one of the casemates which together had to defend the provincial road Hilversum-Weesp.

* The component is well preserved, but the structural condition is deteriorating due to the current ecological designation.
