NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

NEW HOLLANDIC WATERLINE

Introduction

DAMSLUIS A (at Tienhoven), as a military hydraulic engineering component of the provisions serving inundation and water level management of the Bethunepolder and the Fort at Tienhoven. The defensive system of the New Hollandic Waterline was primarily based on the controlled flooding of (large) terrain surfaces. Controlled inundation required an ingenious system of waterworks, such as sluices, weirs and canals, by means of which the necessary water level could be rapidly set and maintained within narrow limits. Many different types of sluices were applied, depending on the location where they functioned in the system. Sometimes already existing navigation, drainage or check sluices were used, but many new ones were also built or existing ones were (substantially) adapted. Sometimes local water level differences between individual polder units had to be bridged by incorporating or using check sluices in existing quays or dykes. For this purpose, shutter-beam closures in ditches or even in cuts in quays were often applied, but also so-called bypasses with wooden or iron lifting gates or culverts with slides were utilised for this purpose. When the Tienhovensche Vaart and the Nieuweweg were arranged as inundation canal and inundation quay respectively around 1880, several dam sluices were built, including one in a side ditch along the building strip of Tienhoven, approximately 3.5 km east-north-east of the Fort at Tienhoven. This sluice was constructed in connection with the drainage of the peat-dug Bethunepolder in 1880; however, it would have to be capable of being re-inundated and closed in the event of threat of war. Furthermore, the water level of the ditch and of the moat of the Fort at Tienhoven had to be maintained. An identical sluice is located in the Tienhovensche Vaart approximately 200 m west of the Fort at Tienhoven.

Description

DAMSLUIS A (at Tienhoven) at the northern end of the ditch along the east side of the building strip of Tienhoven. The ditch opens into the Tienhovensche Vaart at that location. The dam sluice, built around 1880, consists of two masoned landheads, approximately 2.5 metres wide, set in the ditch with rounded corners. Both heads are provided with two vertical shutter-beam slots executed in natural stone blocks. The slots are intended for the placement of shutter-beams. On top of the landheads, set approximately 3.5 metres apart, are situated natural stone coping stones; davits for lowering shutter-beams are missing, but there are pins by means of which these could be secured.

Valuation

The DAMSLUIS A (at Tienhoven) is of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as a component of the New Hollandic Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and realised in initial construction from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others over approximately 125 years.

* Architectural-historical values, particularly as an expression of military-strategic building construction, which is based on the system of inundation and access defence (19th century),

This concerns here an expression of historical hydraulic engineering related to military-strategic building construction dating from around 1880, namely a dam sluice (shutter-beam sluice) serving the setting and maintenance of military inundation at proper water level.

* Ensemble value and situational values as a component of the New Hollandic Waterline in general and because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex and with the inundation canal the Tienhovensche Vaart and the Fort at Tienhoven in particular.

* The component is representative because it emphasises and illustrates the application of dam sluices specially built for this purpose in the functioning of the New Hollandic Waterline.

* The component is reasonably well preserved because the main form and building technical detailing have remained readily recognisable.
