Cluster 19. Schut-, inlaat- en keersluis, De Weersluis.
NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Inleiding

Description
Cluster 19. Lock, inlet and weir lock, De Weersluis.
NEW HOLLANDIC WATER LINE
Introduction
LOCK, INLET AND WEIR LOCK, DE WEERSLUIS as a combined civil and military hydraulic engineering component of the inundation works of the New Hollandic Water Line. The defence system of the New Hollandic Water Line was primarily based on the controlled flooding of (large) terrain areas. Controlled inundation required an ingenious system of waterworks, such as locks, weirs and canals, with which the necessary water level could be set and maintained quickly and within narrow limits. Many different types of locks were used, depending on the location where they functioned in the system. Sometimes already existing navigation, drainage or weir locks were used, but many new ones were also built or existing ones (substantially) adapted. Locks enable ship traffic between two different watercourses of unequal water level, in this case between the Vecht and the Weersloot, a navigable route towards Loosdrecht. The already existing lock, known as Weersluis, was in 1897 adapted to a limited extent for use within the New Hollandic Water Line. The lock was restored in 1999 and is in use for small recreational navigation; adaptations were made to enable self-operation of the lock gates, including in the form of modern iron balustrades on the gates.
Description
LOCK, INLET AND WEIR LOCK, DE WEERSLUIS, which forms a connection between the river Vecht and the Weersloot - one of the navigable routes and drainage systems for the peat areas located to the east of the Vecht near Tienhoven. The lock known as Weersluis possibly dates in origin from the early 17th century (1609?), but was adapted in 1897 in the context of use within the New Hollandic Water Line. In both lock chambers, among other things, (additional) stop plank grooves were placed which, after a possible inflow of water and placement of stop planks, could serve as barriers to inundation water. Between the grooves in the northwestern lock chamber there is a faded stone on which the year 1887 is legible; apparently the lock was also repaired at that time. The brick lock chamber has a slightly lens-shaped basin and is on the Vecht side integrally connected to an approximately 1.80 m high, likewise brick bridge with sloping wing walls, which is part of the Zandpad and which connects to the western lock chamber. The eastern lock chamber is also slightly elevated. The approximately 3.50 m wide and approximately 15 m long lock is equipped with two sets of wooden pointed gates that can be opened towards the Vecht.
The LOCK, INLET AND WEIR LOCK, DE WEERSLUIS, is of general importance because of:
* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Hollandic Water Line as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially realised from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus, and subsequently strengthened and improved by others over approximately 125 years.
* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of combined military-strategic and civil engineering, which is based on the system of inundation and access defence (19th century).
This concerns a possible 17th-century structure which was adapted in 1897 for use within the New Hollandic Water Line and thereby related to military-strategic engineering, namely a civil lock with an auxiliary military function serving inundation.
* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Hollandic Water Line in general and because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.
* The component is representative because it emphasises and illustrates the application of (already existing) lock works in the functioning of the New Hollandic Water Line.
* The component is reasonably well preserved because principal form, architectural detailing and various components remain recognisable and functional.
