Cluster 17. Bomvrije Remise E.

NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

Cluster 17. Bomb-proof Store E.

NEW HOLLAND WATER LINE

Introduction

BOMB-PROOF STORE E was added during the modernization of Fort Nieuwersluis around 1880, as an earth-covered component. Fort Nieuwersluis in its present form originated from the deepening of the 17th-century fortification works of Nieuwersluis situated on the western bank of the Vecht. This took place in two phases, namely in 1849, when the tower was built and during the comprehensive renewal in 1880-1882, whereby the fort acquired its present form. Fort Nieuwersluis served to defend several inundation works and a relatively large number of linear accesses. The fort was, in contrast to most defensive works from the Old and New Holland Water Lines, oriented towards an attack from the south. This could have taken place if the Vecht access had been crossed. During the comprehensive modernization of Fort Nieuwersluis in 1880-1882 the fort received three bomb-proof stores. They were intended for the storage of cannons and projectiles, but also as shelters for personnel. The cellar served as an ammunition magazine and filling station. The stores are entirely constructed in limewashed concrete. With their thick walls and earth covering they were considered bomb-proof by the standards of the time. With the introduction of the high-explosive grenade from 1885 onwards, bomb-proof conditions no longer existed and buildings of this type could be considered obsolete only a few years after their construction. At Fort Nieuwersluis there are three stores, building C, D and E. C and D are virtually identical single stores; E is a double store.

Description

The BOMB-PROOF STORE E is located at the extreme south-eastern side of the fort. The store is built in limewashed concrete and is earth-covered on three sides and on top. It is a double store, with two adjoining spaces on the ground floor and in the cellar. The uncovered gable on the north side, with slightly receding wing walls, is provided with two rectangular steel sliding doors. Behind each of the doors on the ground floor there is a separate space. These spaces are connected to each other by an opening in the middle of the dividing wall. In the cellar there are also two spaces; these are connected by a passage in the stairwell on the south side. Around the cellar spaces runs a cavity.

Valuation

The BOMB-PROOF STORE E is of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Holland Water Line as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus realized and subsequently by others for approximately 125 years strengthened and improved.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic architecture, which is based on:

a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th century),

b. the arms race with increasingly powerful offensive means (19th century)

This concerns an example of a double bomb-proof store from around 1880.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Holland Water Line. Also because of the functional and physical cohesion with the other components of the complex.

* The component is representative as an example of a bomb-proof store as also built elsewhere in the New Holland Water Line according to a uniform pattern, with application of comparable layout and detailing. The component distinguishes itself from a considerable number of such stores through the use of limewashed concrete instead of brick.

* The component is reasonably well preserved because the store has been little altered compared to its condition from the time of construction.
