Cluster 17. Bomvrije Remise C.
NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Inleiding

Description
Cluster 17. Bombproof Magazine C.
NEW HOLLAND WATER LINE
Introduction
BOMBPROOF MAGAZINE C as added during the modernisation of Fort Nieuwersluis around 1880, a component covered with earth. Fort Nieuwersluis in its present form originated from the excavation of 17th-century fortification works of Nieuwersluis located on the west bank of the Vecht. This happened in two phases, namely in 1849, when the tower was built and during the large-scale renewal in 1880-1882, whereby the fort acquired its present form. Fort Nieuwersluis served to defend some inundation works and a relatively large number of linear accesses. The fort was, in contrast to most defensive works from the Old and New Holland Water Lines, designed to counter an attack from the south. This could occur if the Vecht access had been crossed. During the large-scale modernisation of Fort Nieuwersluis in 1880-1882 the fort received three bombproof magazines. They were intended for the storage of cannons and projectiles, but also as shelters for troops. The cellar served as an ammunition magazine and filling station. The magazines were entirely constructed in lime-pozzolana concrete. With their thick walls and earth covering they were considered bombproof by the standards of the time. With the introduction of high-explosive shells from 1885 onwards, bombproof protection was no longer the case and buildings of this type could be considered obsolete only a few years after their construction. On Fort Nieuwersluis there are three magazines, buildings C, D and E. C and D are virtually identical single magazines, E is a double magazine.
Description
The BOMBPROOF MAGAZINE C is located on the north-west side of the fort with the unprotected facade on the neck or north side. The magazine is constructed in lime-pozzolana concrete and is earthed over on the three other sides and on top. The uncovered facade on the north side is provided with wing walls. The wing walls of magazine C are somewhat larger in dimensions than those of magazine D. Magazine C no longer has a door: there remains a large arched opening with steel beam for a sliding door. Above the door of magazine C is inscribed in concrete 'REMISE C 1880'. The interior of the magazine consists of a vaulted space on the ground floor and a vaulted cellar. They are connected on the south side by a small staircase. The space on the ground floor has ammunition niches in the side walls, originally intended for filled projectiles. In the ceiling there is a hook for hoisting a cannon. The cellar space (former consumption magazine) is surrounded by a cavity wall.
Valuation
The BOMBPROOF MAGAZINE C is of general importance because of:
* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Holland Water Line as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and first laid out from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and Major-Engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others over approximately 125 years.
* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic architecture, which is based on:
a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th century),
b. the competition with increasingly powerful offensive means (19th century)
This is an example of a bombproof magazine from 1880.
* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Holland Water Line. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.
* The component is representative as an example of a bombproof magazine such as those built elsewhere in the New Holland Water Line according to a uniform framework, with the application of comparable layout and detailing. The component distinguishes itself from a considerable number of such magazines by the use of lime-pozzolana concrete instead of brick.
* The component is reasonably well preserved because the magazine has been little altered compared to its condition at the time of construction.
