NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE Inleiding

NEW HOLLANDIC WATERLINE Introduction

CULVERT / BRIDGE (Vreelandseweg at the Kortenhoefsedijk), as a water connection serving inundation on either side of the Vreelandseweg. The raising or removal / destruction of bridges has been a proven means of keeping out intruders since ancient times. Not only was the passage or crossing over a watercourse, a dry or wet ditch or a terrain depression hindered or delayed in this way, but an attacker also had to provide his own means to possibly take the barrier himself. Wooden bridges were relatively quick to destroy, if necessary by setting them on fire. Stone and concrete bridges required a greater and more time-consuming intervention, although a explosive charge could sometimes quickly achieve the desired effect. With the arrival of iron bridges - applied on a large scale in many different variants in the course of the 19th century - the second possibility remained, but the first disappeared. Blowing up bridges was capital destruction and happened only in the direst necessity. One way in which iron bridges could be closed was by removing or making inaccessible (small) parts of them. In a number of cases bridges were deliberately applied to allow inundation water free passage when the inundation level on either side of a barrier was the same and had to remain the same. The latter was the case, among others, with several comparable bridges / culverts (with or without barrier) in the Provincial Road Hilversum-Haarlem east of Vreeland from the 1930s, which served as successors to earlier drawbridges. One of these is the culvert / bridge in the Vreelandseweg slightly east of the Kortenhoefsedijk.

Description

CULVERT / BRIDGE (Vreelandseweg at the Kortenhoefsedijk) slightly east of the Kortenhoefsedijk, executed as a simple concrete slab bridge, which is approximately 30 m wide and has a flow profile of approximately 4.00 m. The bridge is a traffic bridge dating from the second half of the 1930s with two traffic lanes and with a bicycle lane on the south side. Round iron railings on straight posts in white and blue. On either side in front of the bridge in the water two helmeted bollards.

Valuation

The CULVERT / BRIDGE (Vreelandseweg at the Kortenhoefsedijk) is of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others over approximately 125 years.

* Architectural-historical values in particular as an expression of military-strategic building construction, which was based on and arose as a consequence of the system of inundation and access defence (19th and 20th century).

This concerns a component from the 1930s of the 20th century, namely an expression of historical water engineering related to military-strategic building construction in the form of a bridge with inundation provisions.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The component is representative (characteristic) because it is a good example of application of a fixed bridge for the purposes of creating inundations and as part of an access.

* The component is well preserved because it has remained intact in complete form and function.
