Cluster 5. Bomvrij wachthuis.
NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE Inleiding

Description
Cluster 5. Bombproof Guard House.
NEW HOLLAND WATERLINE
Introduction
BOMBPROOF GUARD HOUSE as a built component of Fort Hinderdam. Fort Hinderdam originated as an earthen sconce for the defence of the sea locks formerly located here. In 1672-1673 Fort Hinderdam was rebuilt as a bastioned fort. Two moated lunettes were also laid out at the fort. After the sea locks were moved to Muiden in 1674, the defence of the Vecht and both Vecht banks remained the main function. The fort was modified and adapted several times. In 1848 a guard house was built, which was modified in 1879-1880. By the standards of the time, the guard house was considered bombproof. With the introduction of the explosive grenade from 1885 onwards, there was no longer any bombproof situation and buildings of this type could be considered obsolete. Due to the ecological designation, the fort was not visited, but use was made of drawings and data from the specifications of 1879 for the adaptation of the guard house, building A. It was initially a guard house surrounded by a wet ditch, provided with a bridge. After completion of the renovations, these had to be filled in and demolished respectively. Furthermore, the building underwent a number of internal alterations, masonry was repaired and it can be read that the existing clay covering had to be replaced by heavy sand covering. Also, a large number of gun slits in the existing guard house were bricked up. From the description and drawings, the 1848 guard house appears to have been comparable to, for example, the guard house at Fort De Gagel near Utrecht. Various recent sources indicate that the guard house has meanwhile fallen into considerable disrepair.
Description
BOMBPROOF GUARD HOUSE (building A), constructed in thick brick walls and surrounded for the most part by earth. The structure was built in two phases in 1848 and 1879-1880. As a result of the current ecological designation it is known mainly from the specifications with drawings of 1879. The building is situated almost centrally on the fort and has partly exposed walls on the northwest and northeast sides. The plan is rectangular, with extensions on either side of the northeast facade. In the rectangular section there are three adjoining, equally sized, vaulted spaces (for the men), in the extensions are smaller spaces of various dimensions (for officers, magazine, privies, kitchen and the like). There are various window and door openings, including three windows with semicircular brick recesses dating from 1878-1880. From the specifications it can be gathered that the spaces are provided with (barrel) vaults, which was standard practice. There are also cellars; these usually served, among other things, as water reservoirs; given the presence of drip pipes, this will have been the case here as well.
Valuation
The BOMBPROOF GUARD HOUSE is of general importance by virtue of:
* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Holland Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially constructed from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and Major-Engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others over approximately 125 years.
* Architectural-historical values in particular as an expression of military-strategic building practice, which is based on:
a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th century),
b. the race with increasingly powerful offensive means (19th century)
The component is an example of a bombproof guard house from 1848, rebuilt, modernised and enlarged in 1879-1880.
* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Holland Waterline. Also by virtue of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.
* The component is an example of a bombproof guard house belonging to the New Holland Waterline as others have also been built elsewhere using the same or comparable building materials, layout and detailing. It should be noted that in this case there is the rebuild of 1879-1880 of an older guard house from 1848 surrounded by a wet ditch.
* The component has been preserved in reasonably good condition because it has been handed down in its form from 1880, but it is in poor structural condition due to the ecological designation.
