Introduction

TANK BARRIER WITH TETRAHEDRA as part of an obstacle in an access. Tank barriers were intended to prevent armoured or other vehicles from passing through. They were constructed during the mobilisation period 1939-1940. They consist of a number of steel posts (railway rails or profiled steel beams), mostly pointed, driven diagonally forwards into the ground or concrete. Because of this form they are also called 'asparagus barriers'. These quickly deployable barriers are difficult to remove once installed. Tetrahedra are pointed concrete blocks with four equal surfaces. They are likewise intended as a tank barrier - and more generally - as quickly deployable and removable road barriers. In some cases they were also made of steel and then consisted of diagonally interconnected (profiled) rods or railway rails. Tetrahedra are usually placed in groups. Near Muiden lies a very well-preserved tank barrier on the IJsselmeerdijk at dike section post 254. The dike formed an important access to the fortress Muiden. Description

The barrier consists of a reinforced concrete structure approximately 2.40 metres wide, next to which a number of heavy steel beams with H-profile, sawn off at ground level, are visible. Furthermore, there are in the concrete two rows with rectangular holes, which are still largely fitted with the original railway rails facing the east side (front side), but in parts the railway rails have been sawn off at ground level. The barrier extends across the length of the dike with both slopes approximately 42.00 metres wide. At the foot of the barrier a number of TETRAHEDRA remain, executed as pointed, reinforced concrete blocks with four equal triangular surfaces and with or without an eye for hoisting.
