Inleiding

Introduction

CAST STEEL DOME CASEMATES TYPE G as part of a linear and access defence with group nests, group shelters and the like. In 1936, as a supplement to the reinforced concrete casemate, the so-called cast steel dome casemate was introduced in the Netherlands, which was based on a system already applied in France in 1917. The armoured domes used were small in size (favourable with regard to visibility and hit probability), round in shape (favourable with regard to strength and deflecting hits), relatively simple to produce in series and they had an 'external' firing aperture (favourable with regard to gases and sound). Moreover, they could be manufactured in the Netherlands, which significantly reduced dependence on foreign countries. A first order of 100 units in the Netherlands (at DEMKA) was followed by a second of 50 units with the Belgian Soc. Anonyme John Cockerill. In total, over 700 must have been cast in a short time, but only a few of these have survived. The cast steel domes, with a diameter of 1.75 m and thicknesses of 10-14 centimetres, were installed in multiple casemate types with resistance classes W 12-15. Shortly before the start of the Second World War, so-called Dome Casemates Type G were constructed at various locations in the Dutch lines, in particular in the IJssel line, the Meuse line, the Grebbe line (each approximately 150) and the New Holland Water Line (approximately 80 in a reinforced version of 14 centimetre thickness). The usual construction of reinforced concrete with one or more fixed firing ports was abandoned in favour of a system that possessed, within variable limits (up to 270°), a projectible shooting direction within a cast steel cylinder with dome roof. The firing aperture in the dome formed a rounded rectangular 'eyebrow' of approximately 10 cm thickness, which protruded several decimetres outside the dome and provided protection for the weapon mounted inside it. Both the firing port and the entrance to the casemate, which was located in a recess behind the dome, could be sealed 'gas-tight' from inside. Standard Dome Casemates were equipped with a heavy machine gun as armament. Most domes were placed in Standard Dome Casemates Type G. Standard dome casemates were applied multiple times to defend 'new accesses', that is, at locations where new (automobile) roads or railways were planned or realised. The front side could be provided with an earth covering and camouflage. During the Second World War, the vast majority of domes in the interior were dismantled by the occupier from the casemates - partly by blowing them up - with the aim of recasting them for other steel needs. On the coast, they were partly incorporated into the defence, but were often nevertheless dismantled after the war. Because of this, complete dome casemates are rare; they occur in any case still at the Fort bij Vechten. The concrete structures in which they were placed occur more frequently - but usually in damaged form. The casemates are usually not accessible, because they have been filled with rubble at the location of the missing dome.

Description

CAST STEEL DOME CASEMATES TYPE G are relatively low, virtually square, concrete casemates (ca. 7.00 x 6.50 x 3.00 m; w x d x h), with on the front side, at the height of the dome recessed in it, a backward-sloping surface intended to cause any enemy direct hits to ricochet. On the gorge side the former entrance. The specimens present on the Houtense Vlakte as part of the 'complex Intermediate Position Rijnauwen-Vechten' have all been blown up and as a result exhibit serious concrete damage; the domes have been removed and remelted. The casemates still lie fairly clearly visible in the terrain, because they were intended to have a clear field of fire towards the local (traffic) infrastructure and accesses. Thus, shortly before 1940, the present-day A12 was constructed on the Houtense Vlakte, parallel to the railway. As part of the defence of the access routes towards Utrecht, specimens were also constructed to the southwest of the present traffic junction Lunetten and to the west of the Fort bij Vechten.

Valuation

CAST STEEL DOME CASEMATES TYPE G are of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Holland Water Line as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially constructed from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others over approximately 125 years.

* Military-historical values as part of a continuous military defensive line between the former Zuiderzee and the Biesbosch. This consisted principally of a coherent system of inundation fields and associated inundation means and firing fields. This system was supplemented with various types of built or constructed (defensive) works dating from different periods that served to or contributed to the closure of terrain not to be inundated or other accesses.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic architecture, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th and 20th centuries), b. the arms race with strengthening offensive means (20th century) c. the system of 'living' field fortification in depth (20th century)

These are components from the period 1936-1940. These components are examples of reinforced concrete casemates, now without cast steel dome (removed later).

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Holland Water Line. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex and in particular with the accesses of rail and road routes on the Houtense Vlakte.

* The components are representative (characteristic) because they are clearly recognisable as added to the existing defence system as part of a deconcentrated defensive line.

* The components are moderately well preserved as a result of wilful damage in the period 1940-1945, but they are still easily recognisable in the field as built components.
