Inleiding

Introduction

TANKGRACHT between Katwijk and Wassenaar, located south of the former Valkenburg airfield and running from the Valkenburgse Watering (at Wassenaarseweg) in a south-easterly direction zigzagging to the Wassenaarse Watering (component Z11 of the fortification Vliegbasis "Valkenburg" in the system of the Bureau Registratie Verdedigingswerken, Drawing 407 I). The tankgracht was constructed by the German occupier and can be dated from autumn 1942. It forms part of the southern land front of the Stützpunktgruppe Katwijk that was formed in the dunes and on the beach by a tank wall, so-called "asperges" and dragon's teeth obstacles.

The tankgracht belonged to the defence structure that from 1942 took shape under the name "Atlantikwall". From 13 August 1942 the first documented plans for the strengthening of the "Atlantikwall", which would eventually run from the Bay of Biscay to Norway.

Links in the Atlantikwall were the so-called Stützpunktgruppen. The tankgracht forms the southern boundary of the Stützpunktgruppe Katwijk, one of initially (1942) seven Stützpunktgruppen in the Netherlands - a number that had risen to twelve by 1944. The Stützpunktgruppe Katwijk consisted of a sea front, a land front and air defence. The terrain covered approximately 10 by 5 kilometres and included among other things Valkenburg airfield, two coastal batteries and a heavy anti-aircraft battery. On the seaward side the boulevards of the villages of Katwijk and Noordwijk were screened with two-metre-high tank walls, while on the landward side numerous obstacles were constructed or dug. The form of the Stützpunktgruppe Katwijk was partly determined by the somewhat inland-situated airfield. This made a relatively long land front essential. In the dune areas concrete tank walls and dragon's teeth obstacles formed the defence line, while in the polder land existing watercourses and the Oude Rijn were adapted as a continuous wet tank obstacle and as a tankgracht.

Description

The TANKGRACHT is formed by a channelled, wide watercourse that is bent with a point northwards, a point southwards and once more a point towards the north. The tankgracht has a V-shaped cross-section and a depth of 8 m. Where a post-war extension of the main runway crosses the gracht, the gracht has been filled in.

Valuation

The TANKGRACHT is of general interest - on account of its cultural-historical value as an example of a development phase important for military history of German coastal defence and the expansion of the Atlantikwall, whereby land defence became increasingly important and connection was sought to natural obstacles, namely watercourses; - on account of its ensemble value as part of the larger whole of the Atlantikwall and the Stützpunktgruppe Katwijk, within which the tankgracht is part of the southern land front - on account of ensemble value with the light Flak position designated as Stelling C (BRV numbering) (RM); - on account of its recognisability as a tankgracht in zigzag form; - on account of its situation in relation to the open terrain south of the land front.
