Inleiding
Omschrijving

Description
Cluster 41.
Introduction
SCHERPNEL-FREE SHELTERS TYPE 1916 / I (A1) as components of linear and access defence based on trench systems, covered ways and the like. Within the 'Intermediate Position Rijnauwen-Vechten' there are two shelters of type 1916/I. One shelter lies west of the Rhijnauwenselaan, not far from the group shelter type 1918 / I bordering directly on this road. The other lies south of the A 12 motorway, north of the Fort bij Vechten. Shelters type 1916 / I and 1916 / II were built in 1916 and 1917 in multiple locations in the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie according to more or less uniform or standard design. There are furthermore specimens among others at Fort Vuren and at the Batterij onder Brakel. Executed as monolithic, cylindrical concrete structures, the shelters formed part of concrete experiments by the Corps of Engineers. Such concrete shelters were usually integrated into trenches, on the throat side of the cover. The closed front or forward side of the shelters was covered by a gravel or rubble chest, or by earthworks that formed part of a dyke, a glacis for the protection of the trench or a covered way. These rubble, gravel or earthworks are sometimes no longer present or barely recognizable, while also the traces of the earthen trenches have mostly been largely obliterated. The type 1916 / I (also called type 1917) proved to be very vulnerable in tests. The type is fairly rare, also in the double version 1916 / II, which has two entrances and is approximately 6 metres long.
Description
SCHERPNEL-FREE SHELTERS TYPE 1916 / I (A1) are single-storey, reinforced concrete structures, shrapnel-free military shelters that could provide protection for 4 infantrymen / artillerymen. The shelters 1916 / I were built on a rectangular ground plan of approximately 3.50 x 1.50 x 1.50 m (w x d x h), but executed according to an approximately octagonal cylindrical model that was to promote the deflection of fragments. The long facades, the roof and the outer side of the floor thus show a blunt bend along the full length. Both blind side gables are executed vertically. The shelters Type 1916 / I were constructed as monolithic concrete works and were accessible via an access opening, central on the trench side or throat side. The shrapnel-free shelters type 1916 / I lie largely underground due to the levelling of the ground and are usually closed off by means of masonry or concrete, but in some cases they are still open or have been reopened. The access points, now lying a few tens of centimetres above ground level and only partially visible, are surrounded by vertical, rectangular thickened concrete frames. The shelters could be closed by means of iron hatches, but these are no longer present.
Valuation
The SHRAPNEL-FREE SHELTERS TYPE 1916 / I (A1) of the Intermediate Position Rijnauwen-Vechten are of general importance because of:
* Cultural historical values as components of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially realised from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others over approximately 125 years.
* Military historical values as part of a continuous military defence line between the former Zuiderzee and the Biesbosch. This consisted mainly of a coherent system of inundation fields and associated inundation facilities and firing fields. This system was supplemented with various, dating from different periods, built or established (defence) works that served to or contributed to the closure of non-inundatable terrain or other accesses.
* Architectural historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic architecture, based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th and 20th centuries), b. the race with strengthening offensive means (20th century) c. the system of 'living' field fortification in depth (20th century)
These are components of around 1916, namely examples of shrapnel-free, concrete shelters, which also stand as concrete experiments.
* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex and in particular as a relic associated with trench systems.
* The components are representative (characteristic) because they are recognizable as components of a deconcentrated defence line added to the existing fortification system and represent a fairly large rarity value.
* The components are fairly well preserved and can still be easily recognised in the field as built components.
