Inleiding
SCHOOLGEBOUW van het voormalige Christelijke Groen van Prinsterer Lyceum, gelegen in Vlaardingen op de hoek van de Rotterdamseweg en de Van Hogendorplaan. Het gebouw werd opgetrokken tussen 1954 en 1956. Het was de eerste middelbare school die architect C. Elffers (1898-1987) ontwierp. In oorsprong kreeg Elffers in 1952 de opdracht samen met architect B.J.K. Cramer, maar deze moest zich vanwege gezondheidsredenen in een vrij vroeg stadium terugtrekken uit de planvoorbereidingen. Elffers wilde met het Groen van Prinsterer Lyceum een schoolgebouw realiseren dat bij de leerlingen een gevoel van blijheid zou opwekken, en een sfeer waarin de persoonlijkheid van de kinderen zich harmonisch zou kunnen ontwikkelen. Het Groen van Prinsterer Lyceum maakt onderdeel uit van de door stedenbouwkundige W. van Tijen ontworpen naoorlogse wijk Babberspolder, waarin het schoolgebouw een markante positie inneemt. In de gymzaal / aula bevindt zich een elektronpneumatisch orgel dat daar in 1956 door de fa. Spiering uit Dordrecht werd geplaatst. Dit omdat het Lyceum in de beginjaren tevens als kerkruimte gebruikt werd. Het orgel is vanuit de zaal gezien aan de linkerkant van het podium in de lengterichting opgebouwd. De kas van het instrument heeft geen front, maar is aan de zij- en voorzijde voorzien van lattenroosters. Vanuit de zaal is van het orgel alleen het lattenrooster aan de voorzijde zichtbaar. Het orgel vertegenwoordigt geen monumentale waarde en valt buiten de bescherming van rijkswege. De school heeft ten gevolge van onderwijsvernieuwingen in de loop der jaren een aantal wijzigingen ondergaan. Het oorspronkelijke kleurenschema (dat naar de functionele aard van de ruimte concentratie dan wel activiteit zou stimuleren) is daardoor niet meer aanwezig en diverse vensterpartijen zijn vervangen. Ten gevolge van de toename van het aantal leerlingen is de school drie keer uitgebreid. Elffers was verantwoordelijk voor zowel het ontwerp van de eerste uitbreiding die plaatsvond van 1961 tot 1963 (gymzaal), als de tweede uitbreiding in 1970 (nieuwe vleugel aan de achterzijde van de school). Deze uitbreidingen sluiten qua materialisering, architectonische vormgeving en kleurgebruik aan bij het oorspronkelijke schoolgebouw uit 1956. De derde uitbreiding dateert van 1998 (halfrond bouwvolume direct tegen de achtergevel), en was van de hand van het bureau Van den Berg Kruisheer Elffers, de voortzetting van het bureau van Elffers. Deze uitbreiding kent een in vormentaal en materiaalgebruik contrasterend karakter ten opzichte van het bestaande werk. De uitbreidingen na de oorspronkelijke bouwtijd vallen buiten de bescherming van rijkswege. Eveneens buiten de rijksbescherming vallen het schoolplein en de omringende groenvoorziening, van de hand van A.G. Boxman uit Rotterdam. Het kunstwerk boven de hoofdentree is afkomstig van een ander gebouw in Vlaardingen. Het is daar in 2008 geplaatst op initiatief van de toenmalige schooldirecteur. Dit onderdeel valt eveneens buiten de bescherming van rijkswege.
Omschrijving
De samengestelde plattegrond van het SCHOOLGEBOUW van het voormalige Groen van Prinsterer Lyceum bestaat uit een langgerekte lokalenvleugel die evenwijdig aan de Rotterdamseweg is gelegen. Haaks op de linkerzijde van de voorgevel van de lokalenvleugel bevindt zich een bouwvolume met daarin de administratieve en bestuursfuncties. Tegen de achtergevel van de lokalenvleugel - recht achter de hoofdentree - bevindt zich een tweede haaks volume, dat tevens het verbindende element vormt naar de evenwijdig aan de lokalenvleugel gelegen gymzaal / aula. Het gebouw is opgetrokken in een gewapend betonconstructie.
In het drie bouwlagen hoge volume dat evenwijdig aan de Rotterdamse weg is gesitueerd, zijn in een heldere structuur ter weerszijden van een lange gang de lokalen gesitueerd. Fietsen- en brommerstalling waren ondergebracht in het souterrain van dit bouwdeel. In de voorgevel van dit volume bevindt zich - geheel links in de gevel - de hoofdentree van de school. De entreepartij wordt gemarkeerd door een trap met bordes en een luifel. Inwendig bevindt zich direct achter de entree een hal met vide. De vide is in de buitengevel zichtbaar in de vorm van een glaspui die vrijwel de gehele hoogte van het gebouw beslaat. In de hal achter de hoofdentree bevindt zich het hoofdtrappenhuis, dat nog zijn oorspronkelijke vloerafwerking en traphekken bezit. In de hal bevindt zich voorts een kunstwerk dat van de hand van mej. Hank Hans is. Dit bestaat uit negen kleine beeldhouwwerken van de hoofden van geleerden door de eeuwen heen. Naast Groen van Prinsterer zijn hier Augustinus, Plato, Sophocles, Homerus, Van 't Hoff, Lorentz, Christiaan Huygens en Antony van Leeuwenhoek weergegeven. De architectuur van de lokalenvleugel wordt grotendeels bepaald door de ritmiek van het wit geschilderde betonskelet. Bovenop de lokalenvleugel bevindt zich een kleine klokkentoren die is opgebouwd uit twee witgeverfde betonnen spanten. Hierin bevindt zich een luidklok, die werd gemaakt door de Fa. Gebr. van Bergen uit Midwolda. Direct links van de hoofdentree bevindt zich, haaks op de lokalenvleugel, een vooruitspringend volume dat twee bouwlagen telt. In deze administratieve / bestuursvleugel bevond zich van oorsprong (op de begane grond) de kantine. Op de verdieping waren de bibliotheek, de administratieruimte en de kamer van de rector gesitueerd. Dit volume is opgetrokken uit lichtgele baksteen in kettingverband en wordt afgesloten door een witte horizontale band uit beton. Op de kopgevel van dit volume bevindt zich, ter hoogte van de oorspronkelijke rectorkamer, een pui met een raam, deur en een klein uitspringend balkon. Boven de pui bevindt zich een betonnen reliëf. Dit kunstwerk werd - net als het kunstwerk in de hal - gemaakt door mej. Hank Hans, en heeft het volgende onderwerp: 'De Zaaier, ook al gaat hij wenend, zaait, maar hij keert juichend weder, dragende zijn schoven' (naar Psalm 126 uit het Oude Testament). In het haakse volume tegen de achtergevel waren de scheikunde-, biologie-, en natuurkundelokalen ondergebracht. De architectonische vormgeving van de gevels van dit volume is vergelijkbaar met die van het hoofdgebouw. Waardering
Het SCHOOLGEBOUW van het voormalige Groen van Prinsterer Lyceum is van algemeen belang als een vroeg toonbeeld van een naoorlogs schoolgebouw waarin de destijds levende ideeën over onderwijsvernieuwing worden weerspiegeld. Het schoolgebouw vertegenwoordigt stedenbouwkundige waarde in de door stedenbouwkundige Van Tijen ontworpen naoorlogse wijk Babberspolder. Binnen het oeuvre van architect C. SCHOOL BUILDING of the former Christelijke Groen van Prinsterer Lyceum, situated in Vlaardingen at the corner of Rotterdamseweg and Van Hogendorplaan. The building was erected between 1954 and 1956. The composite plan of the SCHOOL BUILDING of the former Groen van Prinsterer Lyceum consists of an elongated classroom wing situated parallel to Rotterdamseweg. At a right angle to the left side of the front facade of the classroom wing there is a building volume containing administrative and management functions. Against the rear facade of the classroom wing - directly behind the main entrance - there is a second perpendicular volume, which also forms the connecting element to the gymnasium / auditorium situated parallel to the classroom wing. The building is constructed in reinforced concrete.
In the three-storey volume situated parallel to Rotterdamseweg, the classrooms are situated in a clear structure on either side of a long corridor. Bicycle and moped parking were housed in the basement of this building section. In the front facade of this volume is - completely on the left of the facade - the main entrance of the school. The entrance area is marked by a staircase with landing and a canopy. Internally there is a hall with a void directly behind the entrance. The void is visible in the outer facade in the form of a glazed screen that extends almost the entire height of the building. In the hall behind the main entrance is the main staircase, which still has its original floor finish and stair railings. In the hall there is furthermore an artwork by Ms. Hank Hans. This consists of nine small sculptures of the heads of scholars through the ages. Beside Groen van Prinsterer, Augustinus, Plato, Sophocles, Homerus, Van 't Hoff, Lorentz, Christiaan Huygens and Antony van Leeuwenhoek are depicted here. The architecture of the classroom wing is largely determined by the rhythm of the white-painted concrete skeleton. On top of the classroom wing there is a small bell tower which is constructed from two white-painted concrete trusses. On the gable of this volume, at the height of the original rector's room, there is a glazed screen with a window, door and a small projecting balcony. Above the glazed screen there is a concrete relief. This artwork was - like the artwork in the hall - made by Ms. Hank Hans, and has the following subject: 'The Sower, though he goes weeping, sows, but he returns rejoicing, bearing his sheaves' (from Psalm 126 from the Old Testament). In the perpendicular volume against the rear facade were housed the chemistry, biology and physics classrooms. The architectural design of the facades of this volume is comparable to that of the main building. Via the building section with the chemistry, biology and physics classrooms, the gymnasium could be reached, which also served as an auditorium. This volume is - like the management wing - constructed from yellow bricks in chain bond, and is likewise finished with a white horizontal concrete band. Within it are a number of elongated, low windows. In the middle of the rear facade of the gymnasium there is a slightly recessed glazed screen which is articulated by the vertical white-painted trusses of the concrete skeleton.

The SCHOOL BUILDING of the former Groen van Prinsterer Lyceum is of general importance as an early example of a post-war school building in which the prevailing ideas of the time about educational innovation are reflected.
