Inleiding

Description
Introduction
RESIDENTIAL BLOCK of four storeys, forming part of the Warnersblokken complex; by A. Warners (1914-1981), executed in 1957 as part of the Zuider Amstelkanaal I expansion plan. This replaced an expansion plan from 1940. The colour scheme of the panels below the windows was designed by artist Joseph Ongenae but upon renewal of the windows was replaced by coloured film in the same colours however with a different colour intensity and arrangement. Currently the layout of many dwellings has been adapted to new living preferences.
Description
The ground floor of the building block is set back and placed on pylons. The spaces between the pylons are filled with yellow brick and contain the storage rooms. The whole is executed in system construction. The white-painted façades are finished with coloured panels below the windows. The two entrance sections with stairwell are emphasised by the panels below the windows being more uniform in colour there than on the rest of the façades (grey tones only for example).
The internal balconies on the front elevation have on one side a white-painted wall with a balcony door and on the other side a window. On the rear façade the yellow brick is left exposed on the other side of the balconies. The balconies are closed off by a railing. The gable end façades are relatively closed in execution; the façade on the side of the adjoining building block is executed in yellow brick set in a white-painted frame. The other façade is finished with a yellow-painted external insulation material, set in the white-painted frame.
The original interior layout consisted of two entrance sections. Behind each entrance section is a central entrance hall with stairwell, storage rooms against the rear façade and garages against the front elevation. The central stairwell gave access on the storeys to three dwellings each time: on either side of the stairwell two three-room dwellings; mirrored in relation to each other, with a balcony on the front and rear sides. Directly opposite the stairwell, thus on the side of the rear façade, a one-room dwelling (studio flat) without a balcony.
Valuation
The residential block is of general importance - as an evident milestone in the development of mid-twentieth-century architecture and urban planning in the Netherlands; - by virtue of its ensemble value as part of a complex with four identical residential blocks; - by virtue of its urban planning value as part of the Zuider Amstelkanaal I expansion plans, situated in a spacious green setting; - by virtue of its socio-cultural value as a residential block for the middle class and for that time, unusual living forms (studio flats); - by virtue of its architectural history value as a multi-storey building inspired by the work of Le Corbusier and Rietveld; - by virtue of the special artistic application through the use of coloured panels below the windows and the integration of art and architecture in the exterior.
