Inleiding
- de cultuurhistorische waarde want het betreft een bouwkundig exponent van de naoorlogse jaren en in die zin bezit het benzinestation symboolwaarde voor de groeiende welvaart en heeft het ijkwaarde voor de daarmee nauw verbonden toenemende automobiliteit in Nederland;
- architectuurhistorische waarde want het is een belangwekkende proeve uit het rijke oeuvre van W.M. Dudok en vormt een mijlpaal in de geschiedenis van het naoorlogse bouwen in ons land;
- de architectuurhistorische waarde want het betreft in typologisch opzicht een zeer vroeg voorbeeld: het ontwerp van het prototype dateert uit 1953, het gaat om een gestandaardiseerd ontwerp dat in geheel Nederland is gebouwd;
- de architectuurhistorische betekenis want het is het laatste functionerende benzinestation van een type waarvan tot 1967 in Nederland 112 exemplaren zijn gebouwd: het exemplaar te Groningen is het enige nog in bedrijf zijnde benzinestation van dit type;
- de architectuur- en bouwhistorische betekenis want de toegepaste constructie geldt als interessant; deze bestaat uit een stalen kap die door middel van trekstangen aan stalen kolommen is bevestigd en verder is het frame van de winkelruimte van staal;
- de markante verschijningsvorm en de esthetische hoedanigheid van het object (met de twee licht hellende dakvlakken en de ruimhartige toepassing van glas) aangezien deze karakteristieken in hoge mate bijdragen aan de functionaliteit en aan de beeld- en herkenningswaarde van het benzinestation;

Description
Introduction
PETROL STATION WITH TRANSFORMER HOUSE at Turfsingel 16 in Groningen. From a typological perspective, this is a very early example: the prototype design dates from 1953, and it concerns a standardised design that was built throughout the entire Netherlands. In the years following the Second World War, independent petrol stations emerged along Dutch roads. The oil companies engaged renowned architects, for example W.M. Dudok (1884-1974) and S. van Ravesteyn (1889-1983). The petrol station with transformer house built on behalf of Esso Nederland N.V. in 1954-1955 in Groningen stands on a triangular, elongated plot of land that forms part of the green strip on the north side of the quay of the Lopende Diep and the Turfsingel, near the intersection of Turfsingel, Boterdiep and Bloemstraat. The object is a design by architect W.M. Dudok from Hilversum, and the contractor was Geerdink from Rotterdam. Initially, the municipality planned to build a transformer house in the same location on the Turfsingel and Esso was not granted building permission. Following negotiations between the municipality and Esso, the oil company agreed to a combination of transformer house and petrol station under one roof, and on 4 August 1954 building permission was granted for a combination of petrol station and transformer house under one roof. The building costs amounted to 40,000 guilders. After 1976, Esso withdrew and the municipality—owner of the building—rented the petrol station to the 'white pumps' company BIM. Since 2008, oil company Gulf has operated the petrol station. The object is equipped with colours in Gulf's corporate identity: azure blue, cream white, orange.
Description
The single-storey petrol station with transformer house has a rectangular floor plan of 9.50 x 7.00 metres. The foundation consists of fourteen reinforced concrete slabs and the walls above a concrete plinth are composed of a concrete skeleton with glazed and steel facades and brick partition walls. The building mass comprises two identical, back-to-back volumes, both provided with a sloping concrete roof canopy in the form of a lean-to roof. From the centre, at the point where both volumes and the low sides of the lean-to roofs meet, the roof slopes rise at the front and rear (east and west) at an angle to a height of approximately 4.00 m. The roof edge tapers towards the ends, has an overhang on all four sides and rests on two tapered concrete columns between both building volumes. The eastern part of the building volume houses the petrol station shop and contains glass panels with fanlights on two sides (east and north); internally, a partition wall originally divided the eastern part into a storage room and a 'salesroom'. The western part contains the transformer station and toilet facilities for men and women; this section has a closed character externally and contrasts in this respect with the shop section, which is fitted on two sides with steel facades approximately 3.00 m high with glazed infill. The closed building section with transformer house and toilet facilities has the same panel division as the shop section, but the panels of the facade are covered with steel plates. A renovation in 1982 by the architectural firm Wijnsema from Groningen resulted in the relocation of the steel entrance door from the north side to the east facade and the removal of internal storage areas. Internally, among other things, a steel roof truss structure with tie rods attached to steel columns; steel frame of the till area. The shop space still partially contains the original wall tiles, and the ceiling was lowered in the 1980s.
Valuation
The petrol station with transformer house from 1954-1955, designed by W.M. Dudok, represents matters of public interest on the basis of:
- the cultural-historical value, as it constitutes a built example of the post-war years and in that sense the petrol station possesses symbolic value for growing prosperity and has reference value for the closely linked increase in motorisation in the Netherlands;
- architectural-historical value, as it is an important work from the extensive oeuvre of W.M. Dudok and represents a milestone in the history of post-war building in our country;
- architectural-historical value, as it represents, from a typological perspective, a very early example: the prototype design dates from 1953, and it concerns a standardised design that was built throughout the entire Netherlands;
- architectural-historical significance, as it is the last functioning petrol station of a type of which 112 examples were built in the Netherlands up to 1967: the example in Groningen is the only petrol station of this type still in operation;
- architectural and building-historical significance, as the construction method used is considered interesting; this consists of a steel roof truss secured by means of tie rods to steel columns, and furthermore the frame of the shop area is of steel;
- the distinctive appearance and aesthetic quality of the object (with the two gently sloping roof surfaces and the generous application of glass), as these characteristics contribute greatly to the functionality and to the visual impact and recognisability of the petrol station;
- the integrity, as the object contains only minor alterations compared to the original design.
