Inleiding

Introduction

Building 68 stands detached in a wooded setting between number 67 and 75, on the west side of the north-south running, so-called Lange Jammer at Groot-Heidekamp. The roof ridge is oriented east-west and is perpendicular to the Lange Jammer. Building 68 is a military barracks created in 1940-1941 as a 'Regelbau' and at macro level is part of a large military airfield structure from the years 1940-1945, at meso level of a sparse complex of buildings arranged in a hamlet-like setting, and within this at micro level of a number of somewhat peripherally located buildings grouped in loose linear arrangement.

Description

Single-storey, relatively small, brick MILITARY BARRACKS with approximately 50 cm thick external walls and partly with crawlspace, on a rectangular footprint and covered by a hipped roof slightly flared at the bottom, laid with mixed corrugated newly improved hollow (Dutch) tiles with a brick chimney through the roof ridge. In the eastern gable end / main facade on the right an access opening with two steps, containing wooden batten door with robust hinges and a fanlight divided into four panes and to the left of this a pair of window openings with concrete lintel, with four-pane tilt windows above and below double wooden inward-opening two-pane casement windows, below the lintel fitted with sheet steel shutters with hourglass motif painted in green and white. In the western gable end a pair of similar window openings and between these a bricked-up access opening below four-pane fanlight. Both long facades each with a pair of similar window openings. Rainwater gutters all around. The interior is partly modernized, among other things through new doors, somewhat lowered ceiling and fixtures. A staircase characteristic of the building period is presumed to be present behind later lining.

Valuation

MILITARY BARRACKS, of general importance as a readily recognizable component of a military barracks camp dating from the Second World War and established by the German occupier as part of a large military airfield, because of: architectural-historical, urban planning, military and cultural-historical and complex and ensemble values, which may be evident among other things from the traditionalist building style inspired by local forms, from the components and details characteristic of the building period, from the artificially established hamlet-like structure and the camouflage carried through to the finest detail, from the coherence of and with the total military airfield concept and the spatial main lines and components of the camp, and from the mutual relationship of the forms applied herein.
