Omschrijving

Description

The HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT forms an ensemble of green accents in which various sections can be recognised. The English garden and park layout on either side of the Gulp, planted with beeches and groups of conifers, was laid out in 1838 by architect M.F. Weythe from Düsseldorf and subsequently modified by landscape architect L. Fuchs in 1856. Fuchs provided a partial garden in formal style with topiary elements. The Gulp has a branch towards the moat and passes several (....) modern little bridges and widens at a weir with cascade into a pond. The Gulp functions from various points as a focal point. To the northeast of the English garden is a section in geometric style formed by a path in the shape of a circle with inscribed circle on which four paths meet, in the centre lies a round pond. Formerly the vegetable garden was here; nowadays this part is laid out with simple parterres. On the west side of the castle is a square vegetable garden which is enclosed on the north and west sides with a garden wall in brick and marl; in the middle of the vegetable garden is a remnant of a round water basin (still present from the old layout), at some distance to the south of the pavilion. Furthermore, there is here the remnant of an elongated narrow pond (north-south), also from the old layout. A drive planted with oak and lime connects the national road (from 1825) with the gate in the north wing of the first farm building or outer ward; this drive was retained from an earlier, classicist layout. The same applies to a second drive (Riehagervoetpad) which is at right angles to the first and runs from east to west and was planted with beeches in 1951.

The Riehagervoetpad continues in a westerly direction. From the castle towards Pesaken there are sight lines in a westerly direction to the highest part of the slope; between the gently undulating grounds and open spaces there are also sight lines towards the castle. The Gulp turns into a meander on the west side of the country estate. At the western boundary of the area is a side entrance and further northwards a walking path through the meadow. This path connects to the road Osebos, which in turn connects to the National Road.

- its significance for the history of garden and landscape art;

- its age;

- its integrity in both main features and details;

- the total ensemble which guarantees a rich and varied range of historic experience and viewing moments.
