Omschrijving

Description

The core of the HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT is formed by the hotel Groot Warnsborn which stands on the site of the 19th-century house destroyed in the Second World War. Surrounding the hotel is a 19th-century landscape park, largely overlaid on an 18th-century reclamation structure. At the house, but especially around the orangery, there is a new architectonic garden layout created in 1912-1915 by H. Copijn.

On the historic country estate Warnsborn the following elements are of historical significance:

- The hotel is situated at the end of a long vista (XXa), which is accessible from the south-east via a winding drive from the entrance on the Bakenbergseweg. A spring-fed stream accompanies the vista alternately on the east and west side. At the hotel the vista branches in a forked manner. In the intervening terrain, in the place of a pond now lies an ornamental garden with pond and lawn.

- The brick terrace walls with stairs behind the house are remnants of the early 20th-century layout, probably by Copijn.

- The landscape layout to the north of the house consists of ample rolling meadows with groups of trees (beech, oak, maple, acacia), winding paths, a remnant of the 19th-century square and round pond. The southern (square) pond is still recognisable as an accent difference in the terrain. The northern (round) pond is fed by a spring-fed stream which enters the pond via an artfully constructed cascade (see component 8 for this) between beeches. The stream course has partially brick facing and is partly composed of fieldstone. The round pond is connected on the north side to a short canal which transitions into a winding stream. The section which forms the connection between the round pond and the canal has a wooden bridge with iron substructure (see component 7A for this). The canal leads to a meadow enclosed by tree avenues. Here lie two elongated, smoothly flowing ponds. Along the ponds runs a walk. At the narrow passage between the two northern ponds is a bridge with cemented balustrade (see component 7B for this). The height differences between stream and ponds are accentuated at a number of places by small reconstructed cascades, formed by fieldstone (see component 8 for this).

- On the west side of the hotel lies a wooded area with a rectilinear path pattern, a result of the 18th-century reclamations. One of the west-east running avenues (formerly Kapellaan) offers a view of the chapel (see component 5 for this). Also on the avenue the reclamation farmsteads de Zevenster and Rust en Vreugde which are not included as protected monuments. Particularly at the junction with the hotel surroundings, there is a complicated system of avenues and paths with various forks and winding paths from the mid-19th century.

- On the south and south-east side of the country estate is a steeply undulating, elevated terrain through which the access road winds. Here is the chapel (see component 5 for this). To the east of this a hill with access to an ice house (see component 4 for this). The southern part is characterised by rolling arable and pasture lands which on the north side transition into the elevated park woodland. Here lies the core of Hoog Erf, the farmstead which was rebuilt after its destruction in the Second World War. From Hoog Erf a winding woodland path planted with oaks ('Nieuweweg' in 1821) leads through this parcel and arrives at one of the arms of the six-armed avenue system from the early 19th century.

- On the south side an erosion valley with spring-fed stream, Klein Zwitserland, a steeply undulating, partly artificially constructed parcel with park woodland with beeches and Dutch oaks, through which wind the narrow stream courses and a few spring heads of the stream which runs in a northerly direction and ultimately enters the ponds behind the hotel. Over the stream courses lie a number of simple wooden bridges.

- To the east of the carriage house and to the south of the orangery, on the former vegetable garden site, there is a garden designed by Copijn in 1912 and reconstructed in 2000 in the new architectural style. The garden at the location of the old vegetable garden is built up from three terraces with retaining walls of stacked Bentheim stone. On the south side a half-circular enclosure (exedra) which had been added to the old vegetable garden. The geometric path system encloses rectangular lawns with flower and rose beds designed in various patterns, accentuated by narrow shell-scattered paths. An elongated pond with round basins at the ends and a geometric pond, both with concrete floors, walls and edges are the symmetrical points around which the garden is arranged. In the highest part of the garden are pergolas and trellises specially designed for climbing plants. The various terraces are accessible via stairs in the terrace walls. Yew hedges and a garden wall partially surround the terrace garden.

- On the north side of the orangery a rock garden designed by Copijn and the so-called rhododendron valley, a depression planted with rhododendrons and originally with a small pond. The rock garden is a winding path, laid out as a connection between carriage house and orangery, which was dressed on both sides with rock formations of Bentheim stone and a collection of alpine flora and conifers.
