Omschrijving

- de voorbeeldfunctie als een zeldzaam en representatief vroeg 17de-eeuwse tuinaanleg;

- de aanwezigheid van de oorspronkelijke structuren van de verschillende perioden van aanleg;

- het belang van de aanleg voor de geschiedenis van de tuin- en landschapsarchitectuur;

- de helderheid van het concept van aanleg;

- de, deels ook in detail, nog vrij gaaf bewaarde structuur;

- de aanwezigheid van monumentale pineta en een bijzondere vogelverzameling;

- de aanwezigheid van tuinsieraden;

- de functioneel-ruimtelijke relatie met de andere onderdelen van de buitenplaats;

- zijn verbinding met het omringende kampenontginnings- en essenlandschap;

Description

HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT. The garden and park layout of Het Warmelo has features from the 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. The old structure of the avenues and the partly threefold encircling moat indicate an early 17th-century layout. The entire site is surrounded by woodland and open fields. In the mid-nineteen-twenties, Baron Creutz commissioned the gardens to be restored. From around 1930 this work commenced, probably partly to the design of landscape architect H. Poortman. This resulted in a mixed garden style. Behind the house, within the original 17th-century Dutch classical garden layout, came a large moated lawn garden with borders. Remains of the 19th-century landscape garden lie outside the watercourses and contain many romantic small 'park rooms' and 'park passages' and rhododendrons. From the 19th century also dates the idea of the tree collections (arboreta and pineta) and a special bird collection, in the form of a menagerie. After the Creutz family, during the period 1952-1971 the gardens were maintained and partly renewed by Princess Armgard of Lippe Biesterfeld. Since 1977 the original layout has been maintained and additions, refinements and reconstructions continue to take place. The historic garden and park layout includes the forecourt situated in front of the main building. This forecourt has a square lawn with rounded corners, surrounded by gravel. On the central lawn low box hedges are planted decoratively; the entrance gates of the outbuildings are flanked by yew (topiary). The historic garden and park layout also encompasses a 17th-century 'French garden' located close to the house with a rococo pond, a rose garden with a new glasshouse serving as an orangery, and a bird garden. Around the French garden a park was laid out in the English style in the 18th century with, among other things, several species of exotic trees. Presumably during the period of the Creutz family the large round pond behind the house was created. The 19th-century Victorian garden (Pinetum) located to the east of the main building is characterised by a large lawn bordered by large coniferous trees. In the 20th century, adjacent to the bog garden, the well garden was laid out, symmetric in layout, small-scale and intimate in atmosphere. This well garden is surrounded by yew hedges and has oriental stylistic forms in the shape of two oblong natural stone ponds and a tall water well of sandstone. The well garden is accessible via a wrought-iron garden gate and a few sandstone steps.

Valuation

The HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT is of general importance on account of:

- its exemplary function as a rare and representative early 17th-century garden layout;

- the presence of the original structures from the different periods of layout;

- its importance for the history of garden and landscape architecture;

- the clarity of the layout concept;

- the structure, preserved relatively intact both generally and in detail;

- the presence of monumental pineta and a special bird collection;

- the presence of garden ornaments;

- the functional-spatial relationship with the other components of the country estate;

- its connection with the surrounding reclaimed and ridge-and-furrow landscape;

- its geographic coherence with the nearby castle Diepenheim, the old town Diepenheim and the village Diepenheim.
