Inleiding

Introduction

The casemate was built in 1944 as part of the expansion of the German Panther position and is located on the section of the dike line in the municipality of Woudenberg between the dam lock in the Roffelaarskade and the Pothbridge.

Description:

Defensive work erected in 1944, consisting of a concrete German gun casemate. The casemate was built as part of the expansion of the German Panther position and lies embedded in the middle of the dike line.

This is a flanking concrete casemate. The casemate was armed with a heavy machine gun and was intended for flanking fire. The enemy side is protected by 1.20 m of reinforced concrete, while the roof is 1 metre thick and the rear 80 cm. The firing aperture with a field of fire of 40 degrees is protected by a concrete projection, so that the opening was difficult for the enemy to observe. The door was equipped with a rifle firing port. The casemate has a rectangular floor plan with dimensions of 4.5 by 3.45 metres, excluding a projecting foundation border of 0.2 metres. The height of the casemate is 3.30 metres including the floor slab. Chamfers were made around the perimeter of the roof to cause shells to ricochet.

Valuation:

The casemate is of general importance because of:

Cultural historical value through its memorial value because of its function in German defensive measures during the final phase of the Second World War.

Architectural historical value in particular as an expression of the fortifications of the German Panther position, as laid out in 1944.

Ensemble value because of the functional and spatial relationship to the other components of the Grebbelinie, as this took shape in phases between 1744 and 1944.
