The register's description

Inleiding:

Introduction:

The casemate was built in 1939-1940 as part of the reinforcement of the Valleistelling and is located on the section of the dike line in the municipality of Woudenberg between the Broekerweg and the boundary with the municipality of Utrechtse Heuvelrug. It is one of a total of 21 casemates from this period that remain on this section of the dike line.

Description:

A DEFENSIVE WORK constructed in 1939-1940, consisting of a concrete machine-gun casemate of type K (Kolf). The casemate was built as part of the reinforcement of the Valleistelling and is located in the rear of the dike line.

This is a flanking combat position developed in 1939 and applied in limited numbers for a heavy or light machine gun. The casemate is built of reinforced concrete and has a rectangular plan with an entrance in the rear and a firing aperture in the front. The front wall is 0.45 meters thick, the other walls 0.50 meters and the roof cover 0.55 meters. Only one of this type was built in the Grebbelinie. In contrast to the other types of casemates in the Valleistelling, this type does not have bevels around the perimeter of the roof to deflect grenade fragments.

Valuation:

The casemate is of general importance because of:

Cultural-historical value through its commemorative value because of its role during the fighting in 1939-1940.

Architectural-historical value in particular as an expression of military-strategic architecture, which was based on the outpost function during mobilization and military operations 1939-1940.

Ensemble value because of the functional-spatial relationship to the other components of the Grebbelinie, as it developed phase by phase in the period between 1744 and 1944.
