The register's description

Inleiding:

fase 4: 1799, versterking Franse Tijd

Introduction:

The Outwork at the Asschatterkade is located at the eastern end of the Asschatterkade approximately 1000 metres east of the Liniedijk at Leusden. The outwork was intended for the closure and defence of the Asschatterkade and the Asschatterweg. Fierce fighting took place around the dike and the outwork in the May days of 1940, which caused the German advance to be halted at this location.

Description:

An open earthen FORTIFICATION erected in 1799, consisting of two ramparts arranged as a hornwork with a bastion on both sides of the Asschatterweg with a wet moat on the front side. The work has a maximum area of 250 by 40 metres, including the moat on the front side. On the north side of the Asschatterweg, the rampart is connected to the Asschatterkade. In 1939-1940, in the context of the fortification of the Valleistelling, a number of casemates were built on the Outwork. At various locations, eroded trenches from this period can also be recognised.

Valuation:

The Outwork is of general importance on account of:

Cultural-historical values as a component of the Grebbelinie, as it was erected in six phases over a period of 200 years. Of great importance due to its commemorative value on account of its role during the combat operations in 1939-1940.

Architectural-historical values in particular as an expression of military-strategic building, which is based on:

a. the system of inundation and access defence (18th, 19th and 20th centuries),

This is an object that in its initial construction is an example of fortifications from the period:

phase 4: 1799, fortification French Period

The complex is rare because it is still an almost complete surviving example of an 18th century fortification in the Grebbelinie and is as such representative (characteristic) of this type of fortification
