Inleiding

Introduction

The casemate was built in 1939-1940 as part of the reinforcement of the Valleistelling and is located on the section of the dyke line in the municipality of Leusden near the intersection with the Langesteeg. It is one of a total of 13 casemates from this period that still remain on this section of the dyke line.

Description:

Defence work constructed in 1939-1940, consisting of a concrete machine gun casemate of type B. The casemate was built as part of the reinforcement of the Valleistelling and is located behind the dyke line.

This is a flanking concrete casemate. The casemate was armed with a heavy machine gun and was intended for flanking fire. The enemy side is protected by 1.20 m reinforced concrete, while the roof is 1 metre thick and the rear 80 cm. The gun port with a field of fire of 40 degrees is protected by a concrete projection, so that the opening was difficult for the enemy to observe. The door was equipped with a rifle port. The casemate has a rectangular plan with dimensions of 4.5 by 3.45 metres, excluding a projecting foundation edge of 0.2 metres. The height of the casemate is 3.30 metres including floor slab. Bevels have been made around the roof edge to cause shells to ricochet off.

Valuation:

The casemate is of general importance because of:

Cultural-historical value through its commemorative value due to its role during the combat operations in 1939-1940.

Architectural-historical value in particular as an expression of military-strategic building, which was based on the outpost function during mobilisation and wartime operations 1939-1940.

Ensemble value due to the functional-spatial relationship to the other components of the Grebbelinie, as this was developed in phases between 1744 and 1944.
