The register's description

Inleiding

Waardering

Het prieel is van algemeen belang:

- uit architectuur- en bouwhistorisch oogpunt vanwege de toegepaste constructiewijze, detaillering, ornamentiek en esthetische kwaliteiten;

- uit tuinhistorisch oogpunt als onderdeel van een aan het eind van de negentiende eeuw aangelegde tuin, waarin tevens en waterput gesitueerd is die stilistisch verwantschap vertoont;

- vanwege de ensemblewaarde als onderdeel van het complex;

- vanwege het belang voor het oeuvre van de firma Moerkoert;

- vanwege de uniciteit en zeldzaamheid.

Introduction

The arbour was delivered in October 1892, in connection with the renewal of the garden layout. It was delivered by the firm Moerkoert. This Utrecht firm worked frequently with Copijn from Groenekan, the presumed creator of the garden design for the Snouck van Loosenhuis. The business was specialised in the - mostly serial - manufacture of artificial grottoes, artificial rocks, ornamental walls and sham ruins. The arbour was made in cement rustication, a technique of reinforced cement construction. It gives the impression of being composed of tree trunks and branches. It is possible that the arbour was delivered in prefabricated elements and assembled and finished on site. It is certain that it was painted when it was delivered.

Description

The ARBOUR is a pentagonal structure from a skeleton of posts executed as tree trunks. The two rear walls in the corner are closed. The sides facing the garden are left open. On two garden sides, between the posts are low, tree-branch-shaped railings present. The posts with bracing - executed as curved branches - carry a tent roof.

The posts, of which originally three were integrated into the closed walls, consist of iron tubes with a whitish-grey cement coating. The cement is roughly worked to obtain a bark-like appearance. The closed walls consist of mesh over which the cement coating has been applied. They are decorated with grape vines at the top. One of the two closed walls is now replaced by a wooden partition. The roof edge is reinforced with circular reinforcement that is connected to the posts. The roof itself has internal reinforcement and mesh. In places, impressions of disappeared consoles or crownings are present in the cement coating. Some components, in particular the knobs on the small trunks, appear to possess a light brown, ochre-yellow colour.

Valuation

The arbour is of general importance:

- from an architectural and construction-historical perspective because of the applied construction method, detailing, ornamental work and aesthetic qualities;

- from a garden-historical perspective as part of a garden laid out at the end of the nineteenth century, in which a water pump is also situated that displays stylistic affinity;

- because of its ensemble value as part of the complex;

- because of its significance for the oeuvre of the firm Moerkoert;

- because of its uniqueness and rarity.
