Inleiding

MOLEN.

Waardering

De molen is van algemeen belang:

- vanwege bouwtechnisch-historische waarden als een representant van een achtkante spinnekop uit de achttiende eeuw;

- vanwege cultuurhistorische waarden als essentieel onderdeel van de ontginnings- en waterstaatkundige geschiedenis van Friesland en de plaatselijke geschiedenis;

- vanwege situationele waarden betreffende de belendende waterlopen en de historische gaafheid van de omgeving;

- vanwege de gaafheid van de molenbiotoop en de grote landschappelijke betekenis;

Introduction

MILL. The octagonal spindle-head mill with the name 'Doris Mooltsje' was built before 1790 as a polder mill. The mill was dismantled in 1935, during which the sails, the head and the upper part of the octagonal lower tower were removed. The mill remnant was then provided with a diesel engine, by means of which the screw was driven. In the 1970s, the mill remnant was provided with an electric screw pump. The mill remnant was restored at the end of the 1990s and provided with replicas of the head, the complete gear work, as well as the sails. The mill lies on the bank of the Oudegaaster Brekken, in an open polder and lake landscape.

Description

The standing work of the mill consists of the masonry brick base, the timber pyramid-shaped lower tower and the oak head of an octagonal spindle-head mill. The lower tower, provided with two bearing layers, is clad with horizontal boarding and further covered with ceramic slate tiles. The head is turned by means of a turntable and is entirely clad with timber. The mill is equipped as an operational polder mill with a wooden screw in a wooden screw pit. The mill is provided with a wooden upper shaft and has a Flemish wind brace that is operated as a pull rope. The wooden rods are provided with the Old Dutch sail system in the specific execution of small Frisian peasant polder mills. In the octagonal posts of the lower tower are various inscriptions, including some from the end of the eighteenth century.

Valuation

The mill is of general importance:

- because of building technical-historical values as a representative of an octagonal spindle-head mill from the eighteenth century;

- because of cultural-historical values as an essential component of the reclamation and water management history of Friesland and local history;

- because of situational values concerning the adjoining watercourses and the historical intactness of the surroundings;

- because of the intactness of the mill biotope and the great landscape significance;

- because of its rarity as an octagonal spindle-head mill of an exceptionally large size and because of the unusual lower tower construction with two bearing layers which is moreover still covered with rare ceramic slate tiles.
