Inleiding
MOLENRESTANT MET UITBOUW. De wipmolen met de naam 'Veltmolen' is vermoedelijk in de eerste helft van de 18e eeuw gebouwd als poldermolen voor de bemaling van de polder Gijbeland en Noordzijde Hofwegen, waarschijnlijk ter vervanging van een molen die direct aan de oever, de Graafstroom, stond ter bemaling van de in de 15e eeuw ontstane polder. Hij maalde, zoals in de streek meer gebruikelijk, op de boezem uit middels een omkade voorboezem. De molen had een inwendige molenaarswoning, een scheprad als wateropvoerwerktuig en werd in 1913 voorzien van een oliemotor als hulpkrachtbron voor de aandrijving van het scheprad. Hierdoor verviel de inwendige woonruimte en om die reden werd een vrijstaande molenaarswoning bij de molen gebouwd. De molen is in 1926 onttakeld, waarbij het wiekenkruis, het bovenhuis en een deel van het gaande werk werden verwijderd. Het molenrestant behield de functie van gemaal waarin de oliemotor het gehandhaafde uitwendige scheprad aandreef. Omstreeks 1948 werden het scheprad en de oliemotor vervangen door een elektrische centrifugaalpomp in een uitbouw aan de oostzijde van het molenrestant. Omstreeks 1980 werd het gemaal buiten gebruik gesteld. Het molenrestant kreeg een functie als niet-permanent bewoonde woning en is tot op heden als zodanig in gebruik. Het molenrestant ligt circa 230 meter ten noorden van het riviertje de Graafstroom, ten oosten van Bleskensgraaf. De eigen waterlopen en de eerder genoemde voorboezem zijn nog steeds aanwezig. Het molenrestant heeft nog steeds een beeldbepalende functie in het open polderlandschap.
Omschrijving
Het molenrestant met uitbouw bestaat uit een lage gemetselde bakstenen voet met daarop de houten piramidevormige ondertoren van een wipmolen met daaromheen een min of meer ronde molenwerf met eigen waterlopen. Het uit twee bouwlagen bestaande molenrestant heeft een originele tunnel met ijsselsteentjes en is gedekt met riet en voorzien van een puntdak.
Waardering
Het molenrestant met uitbouw is van algemeen belang:
- vanwege bouwtechnisch-historische waarden als herkenbaar en representatief relict van een wipmolen die in de 20e eeuw is omgebouwd tot motorgemaal;
- vanwege cultuurhistorische waarden als essentieel onderdeel van de ontginnings- en waterstaatkundige geschiedenis van Zuid-Holland en de Alblasserwaard in het bijzonder en de plaatselijke geschiedenis;

Introduction
MILL REMNANT WITH EXTENSION. The tilt mill with the name 'Veltmolen' was presumably built in the first half of the 18th century as a polder mill for the drainage of the polder Gijbeland and Noordzijde Hofwegen, probably as a replacement for a mill that stood directly on the bank, the Graafstroom, for the drainage of the polder that originated in the 15th century. It ground, as was more customary in the region, on the boezem by means of an enclosed external boezem. The mill had an internal miller's dwelling, a scoop wheel as a water-lifting device and was in 1913 provided with an oil motor as an auxiliary power source for driving the scoop wheel. As a result the internal living space was eliminated and for that reason a detached miller's dwelling was built next to the mill. The mill was dismantled in 1926, whereby the sail cross, the cap and part of the working machinery were removed. The mill remnant retained the function of a pumping station in which the oil motor drove the maintained external scoop wheel. Around 1948 the scoop wheel and the oil motor were replaced by an electric centrifugal pump in an extension on the east side of the mill remnant. Around 1980 the pumping station was taken out of service. The mill remnant acquired the function of a non-permanently inhabited dwelling and has remained in use as such to the present day. The mill remnant lies approximately 230 metres to the north of the river Graafstroom, to the east of Bleskensgraaf. The private watercourses and the aforementioned external boezem are still present. The mill remnant still has an image-determining function in the open polder landscape.
Description
The mill remnant with extension consists of a low masoned brick base with upon it the wooden pyramidal-shaped lower tower of a tilt mill surrounded by a more or less round mill yard with its own watercourses. The mill remnant consisting of two storeys has an original tunnel with IJssel stones and is covered with reed and provided with a pitched roof.
Valuation
The mill remnant with extension is of general importance:
- by virtue of building-technical and historical values as a recognisable and representative relic of a tilt mill that was converted into a motor pumping station in the 20th century;
- by virtue of cultural-historical values as an essential component of the reclamation and water-management history of South Holland and the Alblasserwaard in particular and the local history;
- by virtue of situational values concerning the adjoining watercourses, including the enclosed external boezem, the open polder landscape and the historical integrity of the open surroundings.
