Inleiding

MOLEN.

Waardering

De molen is van algemeen belang:

- vanwege bouwtechnisch-historische waarden als herkenbaar en representatief voorbeeld van een ronde stenen boezemmolen met een scheprad als wateropvoerwerktuig uit de tweede helft van de 19e eeuw;

- vanwege cultuurhistorische waarden als essentieel onderdeel van de ontginnings- en waterstaatkundige geschiedenis van Nederland, Zuid-Holland en de Lopikerwaard in het bijzonder en de plaatselijke geschiedenis;

- vanwege situationele waarden betreffende de belendende waterlopen, met name de herkenbaarheid van de hoge boezem die als eerste in Nederland in 1485 is gesticht en de historische gaafheid van de omgeving;

- vanwege de gaafheid van de molenbiotoop en de grote landschappelijke betekenis;

Introduction

MILL. The round stone mill with rotating top, designated as 'polder mill number 6', was built in 1874 and was fitted out as a polder mill for the drainage of the Vlist polder to the high polder and is provided with an internal miller's dwelling. The high polder was already established in 1485. The number of polder mills increased over time to 7, from 1871 supported by a steam pumping station. The mill has had two predecessors at the current location. The mill was dismantled around 1914 due to the complete cessation of wind-powered drainage, whereby the sails, cap and operating gear were removed. The watercourses were filled in and the high polder came to an end. The mill body retained its function as a dwelling after dismantling. The mill is situated several kilometres south of Haastrecht, on the east side of the small river Vlist. The mill is very clearly visible in an open polder landscape. The mill body was restored in 2010-2011 and completed with cap, sail cross and old Dutch sails, and operating gear to become a functional mill. In 2017 the mill received a wooden scoop wheel and has been capable of milling since then.

Description

The standing work of the mill consists of the round bottle-shaped tapered brick-built body of a mill with rotating top. The four-storey mill is plastered on the west side. The brick-built watercourses are largely still present.

Valuation

The mill is of general importance:

- because of building-technical-historical values as a recognizable and representative example of a round stone polder mill with a scoop wheel as a water-lifting device from the second half of the 19th century;

- because of cultural-historical values as an essential component of the land reclamation and water management history of the Netherlands, South Holland and the Lopikerwaard in particular and the local history;

- because of situational values concerning the adjoining watercourses, in particular the recognizability of the high polder which was the first to be established in the Netherlands in 1485 and the historical integrity of the surroundings;

- because of the integrity of the mill biotope and the great landscape significance;

- because of its rarity as the only remaining mill from an important polder mill complex and because of its distinctive bottle shape.
