Description
Introduction
Detached DWELLING HOUSE of the gentleman's house type on a small square on the Oostelijke Achterweg in the centre of Middelharnis. The building was constructed as a dwelling house with notary's office in 1876. The building, constructed in Eclectic style, is on important points unique in the town of Middelharnis. In front of the building is a garden with gravel, flower beds, shrubs and a path of setts to reach the front door. A boundary fence consisting of part-renewed wrought-iron railings with double access gate separates the garden from the pavement. On the right side a garden house has been built against the main volume. The garden on the side and rear of the house was laid out after the 1953 Delta Flood. In the late 1960s an extension was built on the (left) side of the building. The conservatory on the rear has been completely renewed recently. Roof windows have been installed in the roof shortly ago.
Description
The gentleman's house is constructed from a rectangular ground plan in dark brown brick in English bond and is enlivened with natural stone. The house has two storeys and an attic storey under a truncated hipped roof with tuiles du Nord. On the roof stand four chimneys. Part of the building is cellaraged. On the left side, the house has an extension of one storey and two bays under a gabled roof with tuiles du Nord. This extension has two windows as in the front gable of the main volume. On the right side a garden house of one storey has been built, constructed in yellow IJssel brick in English bond under a gabled roof with covered Dutch tiles. The garden house has two windows with six-pane sash windows and a lattice door with fanlight and glazing bars in diamond pattern. The front gable of the main volume has a symmetrically articulated cornice-topped facade with five bays and a shallow entrance portico in the centre. On either side of the portico and on the corners of the gable stand grey/white painted, plastered pilasters with rectangular and circular recesses over both storeys. The profiled cornice is carried at the height of the pilasters by two consoles each. Between the pilasters stand arched T-windows with sash windows, grey painted, profiled window surrounds, stone sills and shutters on either side. The ground floor and the first floor above a stone plinth are separated by a profiled cordon. In the middle bay stands the main entrance with double panelled door in a shallow portico with stone doorstep. The door is decorated with fine wrought iron, above the door lies a segmental fanlight with hexagonal lantern, around the door a profiled door surround is applied. In the portico a marble foundation stone has been placed with the inscription 'G.N.K. 31 july 1876'. The middle bay has a balcony on the first floor, which is supported by black painted consoles. The balcony is decorated with diamond bosses and furnished with wrought-iron railing. Opening balcony doors with fanlight with segmental arch and a profiled surround give access to the balcony. The two pilasters on either side of the balcony have Corinthian capitals. On the roof is a roof dormer with Doric pilasters on either side, a semicircular pediment and decorative woodwork on top and sides. The rear gable likewise has five bays. In front of the three bays on the left a conservatory has been built on the ground floor. On the right a renewed, large window.
