Introduction

Friesian STILT FARMSTEAD (stjelp) in sober but carefully executed brick architecture, evidenced by bricks carved in relief (G.R.S. 1853) to the right of the front door dating from 1853. Designer and/or contractor are unknown. In the first half of the twentieth century some modernisations took place (including stencilled work and stained glass fanlights on the front facade, renewal of some internal doors). The farmstead lies on the Workumer trekvaart (Doalte) within the protected townscape Workum, opposite shipyard Bouma and on the Elfstedentocht route. In front of the house there were traditionally shade trees. Between the front farmyard and the road lies (the remains of) the moat with (renewed) wooden footbridge. To the left of the farmstead lies a reed planted with tall-growing trees. The entrance on the right has been redesigned and planted with standard fruit trees. The agricultural function has been lost, but the business section is used among other things for keeping hobby livestock. The residential and business sections are still largely in their original condition.

EXTERIOR. Farmstead built from dark red brick (residential section; fine format, slender lime mortar joint) and Frisian yellow bricks (business section) and covered by a tall hipped roof with blue-glazed Dutch tiles on the residential section and red unglazed on the business section; moulded gutter line; built brick ridge chimney with board and decoration on front; wooden example on rear. The front facade on both sides slightly extended and divided by (from left to right) small cellar window with shutter with ironwork, two cross windows, non-original door and four cross windows (all originally sash windows); coloured stained glass fanlights of later date; single-brick decorative bands above the windows, wooden window sills; wall anchors; in the roof section a (renewed to original pattern) dormer with pediment and cheeks. In the rear and side facades among other things wooden stable doors, recessed wagon doors, wooden windows and full-light three- and six-pane stable windows. In the right side facade nicely worked wooden entrance door (possibly formerly the front door).

INTERIOR RESIDENTIAL SECTION. The layout of the residential section is largely still the original. Residential and business sections are separated from each other by a long corridor onto which the various rooms and the stair to the upper floor open. A small cellar is accessible from the left front room. In the residential section in the left front room beamed ceiling, plank floor with coloured stencilled decoration (rare), wall with bedstead and fitted cupboards (multicoloured finish and subtle ornamentation), interior shutters; in the middle room beamed ceiling, wooden floor (oxblood red), panelled wall with fitted cupboard; in the right room beamed ceiling with subtle stencilled motifs; between the middle and the right room there is a later sliding door. In the corridor a draught door with textured glass and two round-arched doorways to the stair and front door respectively.

INTERIOR BUSINESS SECTION. This also remains in terms of layout (cart section, long cow stable and bûthús), flooring (partly of clay and chips) and detailing (including authentic wrought-iron ironwork) in virtually original condition. Of importance are among other things the pine principal rafter truss, the tall wooden partition wall between the residential and business sections and, in one of the corners, the wooden horse manger.

Valuation

The STILT FARMSTEAD from 1853 with later first half twentieth-century detailing is of general importance because of cultural-historical, architectural-historical and urban planning value. The farmstead is of importance:

- because of the age and the building and use history;

- because of the sober but carefully executed design;

- because of the recognisability and the relatively high degree of integrity of exterior and interior;

- because of the presence of a virtually intact ground plan and valuable interior components;

- as a recognisable link in the development of Friesian farmstead building;

- because of the monumental appearance in relation to the characteristic location on the Workumer trekvaart;

- because of the location within the protected townscape Workum.
