Inleiding
Oostelijk WOONBLOK C, door K.P.C. de Bazel in 1918-1923 ontworpen in de stijl van het Rationalisme. Het woonblok met daarin 179 woningen heeft geen gevel aan het Zaandammerplein. Het binnenterrein is deels gemeenschappelijk en heeft deels privétuinen. Het niveauverschil tussen de hoger gelegen Spaardammerdijk en het lager gelegen plein wordt overbrugd door een openbare, dubbele trap in de Uitgeeststraat.
Omschrijving
Het onregelmatig gevormde woonblok volgt in plattegrond de gebogen loop van de Spaarndammerdijk en aan de andere kant de geknikte Houtrijkstraat.
De tweevoudig geknikte gevelwand aan de Houtrijkstraat heeft een uitspringend deel op de hoek van de Hembrugstraat met daarin een poort naar het binnenterrein met rechts een trappenhuis volgens schema, met octogonale en drieledige vensters. De poort heeft een puntige topgevel, de beide hoeken twee vensterassen. De gevel maakt op de hoek naar de Hembrugstraat een hoogtesprongetje. Tussen de risaliet en de hoek met de Uitgeeststraat heeft de gevel in beide knikken een trappenhuis volgens schema met ronde en drieledige vensters en daartussen vier trappenhuizen met puntige topgevels en aan weerszijden een balkon. De balkons op de eerste verdieping hebben een gemetselde borstwering. De balkons op de tweede en derde verdieping hebben uitstekende betonnen balkonbodems met balustrades. De hoek met de Uitgeeststraat heeft een trappenhuis volgens schema. De korte gevel van de Uitgeeststraat heeft twee hoekrisalieten met twee vensterassen en een middengedeelte met één trappenhuis geflankeerd door ronde en drieledige vensters. Geheel links in de gevel, bij de trappen die leiden naar het hogere straatniveau van de Spaarndammerdijk, bevindt zich een kleine poort naar het binnenterrein. De gebogen, symmetrisch opgebouwde, gevelwand van de Spaarndammerdijk heeft twee hoekrisalieten met elk één trappenhuis volgens schema, met octogonale en drieledige vensters onder puntige topgevels en drie respectievelijk twee vensterassen op de hoeken. Twee middenrisalieten hebben elk twee vensterassen. De drie geveldelen tussen de risalieten hebben twee driezijdig afgeschuinde erkers over de volle lengte tussen twee trappenhuizen met octogonale vensters. Het middelste terugliggende geveldeel heeft centraal een kleine poort.
Vanwege het oplopend straatniveau klimt ook de gevelwand van de Hembrugstraat. De gevel heeft drie trappenhuizen onder puntige topgevels, volgens schema met octogonale en drieledige vensters. Bovendien twee vensterassen op de beide hoeken. De achtergevels worden gekenmerkt door muurdammen met aan weerszijden een klein balkon en twee dubbele ramen. Op de begane grond bevinden zich de bergingen, dan wel de tuindeuren op de privétuinen.
Waardering
Het oostelijk woonblok (C) is van algemeen belang vanwege de stedenbouwkundige, sociaalhistorische en architectuurhistorische waarde als kenmerkend onderdeel van grootstedelijke arbeiderswoningbouw uit de jaren twintig van de twintigste eeuw, waarbij de straatwand, hof en hoekoplossingen een integraal onderdeel vormen van het stedenbouwkundig ontwerp, alsmede vanwege de typologische waarde en vanwege de ensemblewaarde. Between the projection and the corner with the Uitgeeststraat the gable has in both bends a staircase according to scheme with round and three-part windows and between them four staircases with pointed gabled roofs and on either side a balcony. The balconies on the first storey have a masonry breast wall. The balconies on the second and third storeys have projecting concrete balcony floors with balustrades. The corner with the Uitgeeststraat has a staircase according to scheme. The short gable of the Uitgeeststraat has two corner projections with two window bays and a middle section with one staircase flanked by round and three-part windows. Far left in the gable, at the stairs leading to the higher street level of the Spaarndammerdijk, is a small gate to the interior courtyard.
