Inleiding
Voormalige KANTINE behorend bij de kazerne die achter dit pand aan de Oude Haven is gesitueerd. De vestingstad Schoonhoven kreeg in 1862 een Artillerie Instructie Compangnie die gehuisvest werd in het in onbruik geraakt Arsenaal. Met de komst van de nieuwe gebruikers van de oude kazerne, verrezen aan het eind van de 19e eeuw diverse militaire bouwwerken. De in 1876 tot stand gekomen kantine is als zodanig nog steeds herkenbaar vanwege de vormgeving in een sobere Neo-Classicistische stijl. In 1925 werd het pand verbouwd tot Rijkskweekschool waarbij onder anderen, de entree van de achterzijde, naar de pleinzijde werd verplaatst en de vensters voorzien werden van ladderroeden. De huidige functie van dienstencentrum resulteerde in een modernisering van het interieur. Het pand ligt prominent, met de langsgevel evenwijdig aan de westelijke zijde van het Doelenplein. Het maakt onderdeel uit van een cluster van militaire bouwwerken zoals de voormalige kazerne (rijksmon. nr. 33509) en de voormalige Doelen (rijksmon. nr. 33426), schuin tegenover het kantine.
Omschrijving
Vrijstaand, twee verdiepingen tellend pand, opgetrokken in rode baksteen (kruisverband met knipvoeg) onder een met gesmoorde Hollandse pannen gedekt schilddak. De drie traveeën brede voorgevel (oost) wordt door pilasters geleed en eindigt in een gekorniste kroonlijst. Iedere travee heeft drie vensterassen waarvan de zesruits vensters onder vierruits bovenlichten zijn voorzien van ladderroeden. De muuropeningen hebben strekken in gele verblendsteen met een hardstenen sluitsteen. Ook de onderdorpels en de plint zijn van hardsteen. In de linker travee is de entree geplaatst die bestaat uit een dubbele deur onder en groot meerruits bovenlicht. Centraal boven iedere travee is een dakkapel geplaatst voorzien van meerruits vensters onder een zadeldakje met pseudo-tympaan en gezaagde dekstukken. Beide zijgevels zijn nagenoeg blind. De achtergevel wordt door pilasters geleed in drie traveeën met ieder drie vensterassen. Enkele vensters zijn bij de verbouwing van 1925 dichtgezet of veranderd in toiletvensters. De zesruits schuifvensters bevinden zich onder een strekkenlaag. Centraal boven de gevel een hoger oplopende dakkapel met een dubbel luik onder een steekkap met hijsbalk.

De voormalige kantine bij de kazerne is van algemeen belang vanwege de cultuur- en architectuurhistorische waarde

Introduction
Former CANTEEN belonging to the barracks situated behind this building on the Oude Haven. The fortified city Schoonhoven received in 1862 an Artillery Training Company which was housed in the disused Arsenal. With the arrival of the new users of the old barracks, various military buildings were erected at the end of the 19th century. The canteen established in 1876 is still recognisable as such because of its design in a restrained Neo-Classical style. In 1925 the building was converted into a State Teacher Training College, whereby, among other things, the entrance on the rear side was moved to the square side and the windows were provided with ladder glazing bars. The current function as a service centre resulted in a modernisation of the interior. The building is prominently located, with the long facade parallel to the western side of the Doelenplein. It forms part of a cluster of military buildings such as the former barracks (national monument no. 33509) and the former Doelen (national monument no. 33426), diagonally opposite the canteen.
Description
Detached building with two storeys, constructed in red brick (cross bond with closer joints) under a hipped roof covered with dampened Dutch tiles. The three-bay wide front facade (east) is articulated by pilasters and ends in a corniced cornice. Each bay has three window axes with six-light windows under four-light fanlights provided with ladder glazing bars. The wall openings have bands in yellow facing brick with a sandstone keystone. Both the sills and the plinth are also of sandstone. In the left bay is the entrance which consists of a double door under a large multi-light fanlight. Centrally above each bay is a roof dormer placed with multi-light windows under a gabled dormerhead with pseudo-pediment and sawn-out coping tiles. Both side facades are virtually windowless. The rear facade is articulated by pilasters into three bays with each three window axes. Some windows were closed off or converted into toilet windows during the 1925 conversion. The six-light sash windows are located below a band course. Centrally above the facade a higher rising roof dormer with a double shutter under a hip roof with hoisting beam.
