Introduction

Double dwelling house, originally the Holy Ghost Hospital, with special architectural and cultural-historical significance, whereby the successive functions are still clearly legible. Built in the second half of the 14th century (1350-1394) as the Holy Ghost Hospital, originally of single-aisle layout. In the first half of the 15th century (circa 1447), raised and provided on the south side with a narrow side aisle. After 1658 converted to a dwelling house and used as such until 1879, with a major internal renovation around 1862. In 1879 converted in neo-classical style according to a design by architect L.G. Richter into a school with an internal head teacher's residence. From 1913 onwards used respectively as a bakery and a greengrocer's and fruit shop. In 1995-2002 converted again into a double dwelling house. The building is located in the town centre of Hattem and forms part of a closed street facade of the Kruisstraat with residential-commercial buildings located on the building line. The north facade of the building is located on the Gasthuissteeg. It originally contained the entrance to the Holy Ghost Hospital.

Description

Exterior

The former HOLY GHOST HOSPITAL is two storeys high, has a rectangular floor plan and is built in brick. The facades are rendered with plaster. The building has two parallel hipped roofs set at right angles to the Kruisstraat, covered with red old Dutch tiles. Under the left roof is a narrow building section one bay wide; under the right roof is a wider building section the width of three bays. The building sections have one shared front facade (east facade) built in neo-classical style in 1879, which is asymmetrical in layout and is articulated by means of pilasters and a drip moulding. The facade terminates in a cornice on richly worked consoles, originally all of terracotta. The ground floor has a shop front executed in Art Nouveau style, originally from circa 1913, fitted with a surround of glazed brick. To the right of the shop front is a sash window with a glazed fanlight; to the left a two-light window with glazed fanlight. The upper storey has four 12-pane sash windows with plastered eyebrows, fitted with a circular ornament at the top. In the north facade (Gasthuissteeg side) there is a cellar light, a door and on the upper storey two sash windows. There are wall anchors from the 17th century and a cast-iron gutter from the 19th century. The west facade (rear facade) is arranged asymmetrically. On the left is a truncated gable (around 1862) with gutter line and wall anchors from the 17th century. On the ground floor a door and two 12-pane sash windows with sandstone lintels dating from 1862. On the upper storey an identically placed window. A single window at the top. The right building section ends in a roof gutter and is fitted with a round-arched opening on the ground floor and a sash window on the upper storey.

Interior

In the interior there is a cellar from the 17th century with masonry vaults and the tall hospital hall from the second half of the 14th century with transverse ribs and round pillars. In the north facade there are traces of round-arched windows in pointed-arch recesses from the hospital period. In the west facade on the inside remnants of a cloister window. On the attic the oak roof truss structure consisting of four trusses, partly fitted with carpenters' marks. The trusses have curved members and a special collar-tie construction on which the king post rests. The collar ties serve as wind braces. The trusses date from both the first and second phases of the hospital; the collar-tie construction dates from the second building phase. The floor beams with keystones featuring a double pear-drop motif come from the first building phase. From the period of conversion to a dwelling house around 1658 remains a pine floor structure with oak keystones. From the school period 1879-1913 dates a number of round-arch interior doors and an oak staircase with cast-iron balusters and a newel post.
