Inleiding
Voormalig gymnastiekgebouw, behorende bij de voormalige RijksHBS, opgetrokken in 1925 in een voor het noorden van het land opvallend expressieve, met de Amsterdamse school verwante, bouwtrant. De architect is tot op heden niet bekend, maar het ontwerp zou van de hand van een toenmalig gemeentearchitect kunnen zijn. Het in hoge mate nog oorspronkelijke gebouw ligt bij de voormalige RijksHBS en grenst aan het sportveld.
Omschrijving
Gymnastiekgebouw op T-vormige plattegrond, bestaande uit rechthoekige gymzaal waaromheen enigszins U-vormig en lager de ingangspartij, de jongens- en meisjeskleedkamers en de bergplaats zijn gebouwd. Plint van rode Groninger strengperssteen; gepotdekselde houten wanden; de topgevels van de zaal verticaal met hout beschoten; met asfaltpapier beklede elkaar deels overlappende zadeldaken; dakgoten; oorspronkelijk twee, thans nog een hoge roodbakstenen schoorsteen. In de voorgevel (noord) driehoekig beëindigde houten ingangspartij met expressionistische omlijsting; dubbele opgeklampte 'paneel'deuren en dito luiken met ijzeren gehengen. Aan weerszijden een horizontale reeks van vijf door houten profielen gescheiden ramen (oorspronkelijk met zesruits verdeling) van respectievelijk de jongens- en de meisjeskleedkamer. In de rechterzijgevel (west) beganegronds deur met zesruits bovenlicht en liggend zesruits raam (van de bergplaats); daarboven een horizontale reeks van negen door houten profielen gescheiden negenruits ramen; toegang tot de bergplaats via deur met zesruits bovenlicht; luifel; stenen stoepje. In de linkerzijgevel (oost) beganegronds dubbele opgeklampte deuren; daarboven een horizontale reeks ramen als in de westgevel. In de achtergevel (zuid) een zelfde reeks horizontale ramen. De inwendige constructie bestaat uit houten staanders op onder het maaiveld gelegen bakstenen poeren; vloer op houten balken; houten spantconstructie.

Voormalig gymnastiekgebouw uit omstreeks 1925 is van algemeen belang:

Description
Gymnasium building on T-shaped floor plan, consisting of a rectangular gymnasium hall around which somewhat U-shaped and lower the entrance section, the boys' and girls' changing rooms and the storage area have been built. Plinth of red Groninger wire-cut brick; coated wooden walls; the gable ends of the hall vertically boarded with wood; covered with asphalt paper mutually overlapping gabled roofs; roof gutters; originally two, now still one high red-brick chimney. In the front facade (north) triangularly terminated wooden entrance section with expressionist framing; double clamped 'panel' doors and likewise shutters with iron hinges. On either side a horizontal row of five windows separated by wooden profiles (originally with six-pane glazing) of the boys' and girls' changing room respectively. In the right side facade (west) ground-floor door with six-pane fanlight and lying six-pane window (of the storage area); above this a horizontal row of nine nine-pane windows separated by wooden profiles; access to the storage area via door with six-pane fanlight; canopy; stone step. In the left side facade (east) ground-floor double clamped doors; above this a horizontal row of windows as in the west facade. In the rear facade (south) the same row of horizontal windows. The internal construction consists of wooden posts on brick footings located below ground level; floor on wooden beams; wooden roof truss structure.
