Introduction

Neo-Romanesque Mariakapel, 1909. Located within the built-up area of Afferden, near the access gate of the Roman Catholic cemetery. Against the choir side of the chapel stands a small Mariakapel from 1612. This chapel is a national monument and registered under monument number 9023. On either side of the access to the chapel stands a linden tree.

Description

The chapel has a fundamentally hexagonal plan, provided on either side with an extended entrance and choir section. The chapel has a centralized structure with a raised lantern, on which a bell turret is placed.

The chapel has a fundamental tent roof, the highest part of which has been raised twice due to the lantern and bell turret. On the bell turret a weather vane. The whole is covered by tiles in Maas covering. Small overhang on wooden consoles. The entrance section has a recessed gabled roof, also covered by tiles in Maas covering.

The chapel is constructed in dark red brick in English bond, with cut joints. Facades with a profiled, cemented plinth. Corner pilasters. Cemented speckled courses under the window openings. Below the roof overhang of the main volume and the lantern are dentil decorations and arch friezes.

The chapel has six facade surfaces, of which the four facades on the north and south sides of the nave are nearly identical. Each of these four facades has three coupled, varying in height, round arch windows in a light red brick surround. Above these windows a green glazed brick round relieving arch. Below the windows a hardstone sill. The windows have leaded glass, set in iron frames.

The extended entrance section on the west side has a spout gable with shoulder pieces, supported by hardstone consoles and provided with a cemented top covering with cross ridge. The hardstone consoles also function as springing stones for the door arch. A profiled plinth, a hardstone sill.

Double, round arch-shaped wooden door of rabated boards, with decorative fittings, in a double round arch-shaped light red brick surround. The entrance section has in the short south facade a small rectangular window opening with figurative leaded glass, a hardstone sill and a hardstone lintel.

The choir extension, which forms the connection with the old Mariakapel, is recessed on the main volume under a half-hipped roof, with tiles in Maas covering. Above the junction with the old Mariakapel three round arch windows with a hardstone sill, the whole under a green glazed thrust arch. Below the windows a red brick drip moulding.

In the south facade of the choir extension is located a slightly segmental arch-shaped wooden rabated board door with hardstone sill. Above this is an oculus with in it a simple red cross, executed in brick. On the north side of the choir extension an oculus with in it a red brick cross. The brickwork of this cross is executed more decoratively in comparison with the cross on the south side. The lantern has six facade sides, each provided with two coupled round arch-shaped windows under a round arch with keystone and each ended by a red brick arch frieze below the overhang. The windows have hardstone sills and profiled hardstone springing stones in the round arches. In the keystones above the windows alternating yellow, green and red decorative brickwork is applied, in which the letters S, M, N, O and P in succession. In one keystone the year 1909 is applied. The interior of the extended entrance section is entirely plastered and has a small wooden barrel vault. In the blind northern side facade a memorial stone with the inscription "Sanctae virgini matri Dolorosae sacra celebrabor".

The interior of the main volume consists of an ambulatory with six red brick columns, which carry the raised lantern and between which round arch-shaped passages are located. These columns have cut jointing, a profiled brick base and terminate in colonettes on a hardstone decorative springing stone. On the colonettes decorative hardstone ornaments are applied again.

The window openings have red brick surrounds and hardstone sills.

The facade surfaces are white plastered. In the six segments of the ambulatory red brick cross rib vaults, supported on red brick colonettes with cut joints, a hardstone basement and a decorative hardstone springing stone. The cross rib vaults have red brick ribs, with cut joints and four white plastered vault sections. Against the northern and southern facades wooden benches are placed. On the plastered facades of the ambulatory Stations of the Cross are painted.

In the lantern the round arch windows with leaded glass are likewise provided with a red brick surround. At the top in the lantern a cross rib vault with six vault sections. Furthermore there are located here three wall paintings and a wooden shutter.

In the extended choir stands a simple wooden altar. The facade behind the altar also has three coupled windows, with figurative leaded glass from 1942. Below this is an access with stairs to the lowered small Mariakapel from 1612. The wrought iron railwork on either side of the stairs is not authentic. The door opening has a brick surround. On either side of this door opening is a wall painting of an angel. On the right side of the access the text: "Mother of Sorrows pray for us".

Above the door opening in the southern wall of the choir a painting in a round arch-shaped brick surround, depicting the condemnation to death of Christ.

Against the northern wall of the choir are located three cupboards, two electricity cupboards and a sacristy cupboard. Also here a wall painting in a round arch-shaped surround, with a depiction of Jesus, resting in the tomb. Also in the interior there is a cross rib vault. The floor of the chapel has slate covering. In the interior recent furnishings are present.
