Inleiding

Introduction

HUNTING LODGE annex FIRE TOWER from ca. 1920, respectively 1946-1947, built by the Goirlese textile manufacturer Eduard van Puijenbroek. The house displays characteristics of the Chalet style. The object was built on the west bank of the meandering Rovertsche Leij, in the middle of the woods and surrounded by undulating terrain in the southern/western part of the estate Gorp and Rovert.

Description

Tower and hunting lodge form a single unit. The tower, which contains seven storeys, has a rectangular ground plan. The joint entrance area, of hunting lodge and tower, is situated in a semicircular portico at the base of the tower. The portico lies on a small hill projecting onto the second storey of the hunting lodge. The tower has on each storey in the west and east gavel a narrow six-pane glazed window and heavy wrought iron wall anchors. The viewing platform, the uppermost storey, consists of a wooden construction under a flat roof with large overhang. The hunting lodge contains basement, main and attic storeys on a rectangular ground plan. Above this a compound hipped roof with on the west or front side a gabled roof with large overhang. The roof has a bent foot. It is covered with the red newly improved Dutch tile. The zinc gutter lies on cut gutter blocks. In the front gavel on the ground floor a double garage door with above on the storey an outbuilt three-sided wooden bay with half-timbering and on the attic storey under the roof overhang, a loggia. In the rear gavel on the storey an outbuilt wooden balcony. Hunting lodge and tower have a somewhat stepped basement of sintered red/purple brick laid in crossbond. The rising work likewise consists of sintered brick but is apple-blossom coloured. The hunting lodge is laid in half-brick bond and the tower in random bond. The wall openings are accentuated by a red/purple cock-comb.

In front of several windows in front and rear gavel wooden roller shutters are present. The doors of the hunting lodge and tower are of clear oak wood. In the woodwork of balcony and the bay with overlying loggia and roof overhang much cutting and profiled work is applied. In the wooden half-timbering, cut lead drip edges with tooth profile under the filling of masonry. The woodwork is painted in the colours cream and dark green with red for the cutting work on beam heads and profilings. On the south wall of the house a bell turret with small bell.

Valuation

The hunting lodge with fire tower is of general importance. The whole has cultural-historical importance as a special expression of cultural and economic development, as an example of the use of the rural environment of the industrial town of Tilburg by the manufacturers of the textile industry. It is an exceptional example of the development of the typology of hunting lodge and fire tower. The object is of importance because of the architectural integrity of the exterior and interior. The object is of importance because of the architectural-historical, typological and functional rarity.
